    Hi bountiful

    Hope you are well?

How are you getting on with your son away? Bet your place is tidier if he is anything like my daughter!!!!

Hope the weekend went well and your cold has gone.
Thanks Tenmah, my son tends to keep his stuff in his room, so the untidiness does not encroach on my space - he's pretty tidy actually. There is noticeable less washing up though - and that's really nice. My cold had almost gone, thanks.

However, I did come back from my weekend away to find a letter to my son from Barclays saying that he was in arrears with an HP payment and that if he did not pay immediately they would serve a default notice ..... I cannot deal with his debts if he will not admit he has them - but knowing that he is getting into a debt crisis is really painful!

How old is your son? Definitely go on summer course if you can. How much is it? Ours was £140 Friday tea-time to Sunday tea-time. I also paid £28 for the train travel.

Oh dear, that is a worry about your son.

I always say that my daughter doesn't stand a chance when it comes to money because both myself and her Dad are useless with it!

She is doing really well so far though!

Although her untidiness drives me insane, I also think that if that is all she gives me to worry about then things aren't too bad!

OnMonday I attended a memorial service for a friend who died in May - I spent £3.30 on the train, £1.90 on a pasty for lunch, and £6.25 on food I bought intending to contribute to the buffet - when I got there I saw that there was already loads of food and decided (rightly or wrongly) to hang onto the food contributions I had bought! Tuesday's spend was a load of laundry. Today - general food shopping £6.16.

My son has never been able to hold onto money - even as a small kid, if he was given money he had to spend it straight away. I have taught him how to budget etc, and he has managed to save up enough money to go to USA for a 5-week holiday - he's just not good at making sure he leaves enough in the bank to pay the bills......... He's an optimist - and always seems to fall on his feet, so to speak. He gets paid on Friday - and will probably pay everything off - he is holding back the tide less easily then he used to. He's had big lumps of money in the form of student loans coming in for the past two years. I must say, for a kid who has never had much to suddenly get big sums of money coming in - it's big challenge.

I'm not sure about the learned behaviour thing - my brother has two children; one is a complete scrooge and won't part with a penny, the other is a spendthrift! My sister, too, has two children, one is a spender, one is a saver.

I have tried to interest him in What's the Cost? and MSE - even downloaded the teen-pack for him - but he's not ready to hear it yet!

Still, I think it is good that I cannot help him out financially, because I have probably always baled him out at the 11th hour in the past - now I simply cannot because I don't have the money.
