  • I wonder if anyone has any advice for me...

My mother wants to buy a small car to leave at my sister's home in Ireland, so that she can use it whenever she's over there visiting. She is 75 now so hiring a car is expensive.

What's the cheapest way to insure it? The online sites don't really allow for this situation - e.g. asking is it kept on a drive overnight.... yes but it's someone else's drive, in another country.

She has asked her existing insurer for a quote but it was over twice what she currently pays for a car in this country....
  • I completely agree with this tip but not so sure about the cost. !When I did it 3 years ago it was basically six extra lessons at the same rate as my normal driving lessons, which I took with the same instructor after I'd passed my test so cost me around £120.
I also get a pass plus last year :)

At least you can buy your car insurance from your own home page....
  • I know a lot of MSE folk might already know this but please do NOT accept the autorenewal for your car insurance.

Here's another sneaky thing I found out they do: they took the money out of my account, told me as I didn't respond to them they assumed I was OK with an autorenewal (I was a naive, naive person back then!!), quoted me a slightly higher price (by around 40 quid)... AND THEY TOOK MY PROTECTES NO CLAIMS DISCOUNT OFF!!!!!

I never, ever, *ever* opt to not protect my NCD, ever. I was looking through my old insurance paperwork and got the shock of my life where it says "here's what you have opted out of - a protected NCD". :|

I truly, positively, absolutely HATE insurance companies. They are money grabbing and incredibly inhumane about it IMO (not to mention hugely classist, assumptive, etc..!). This was just.. the icing on the !!!!ed Off cake for me!! Thank God I cancelled within the grace period!! :|
  • Hi everyone. I’m 19 years old and trying to get business insurance on a leased S class or E class. The car will most likely be a 2.0l diesel. I’m a personal assistant to the director of an accountancy firm, he’d like me to be his personal Uber driver too. I’m 19 years old, have 1 year no claims discount and currently drive my own car. Any suggestions would be really appreciated :)
  • Do you have to have a valid mot for your car insurance to be valid. I hit a car which was on a road and doesn't have a valid mot now they are trying to claim for damages but the car has no mot so shouldn't of been on the road.

Simple answer not having an MOT does not invalidate any insurance.
  • I had a car accident recently and reported incident to my insurance company but they rejected claim and sent letter saying your policy cancelled because we don't accept your claim but when I check on Askmid I can still see my car is insured.  Now there is a disputed claim running with my insurance company and still waiting for their update.
In the meanwhile, do I need to mention, my policy is cancelled or not when I check quote for new car?
I am not sure does my Insurance company really cancelled policy of just trying to threat me?
    Thanks

Not sure this is much of a tip or trick so probably better starting your own thread.

On what grounds have they cancelled your policy?

At this point in time if you need insurance (of any type) you'd need to declare the fact you've a cancelled policy; you could speak to them and make them aware that its in dispute and going through the complaints process but I'd suspect more will say they'll reconsider after your complaint is upheld rather than giving you the benefit of the doubt now. This will mean many mainstream insurers will not offer terms and so if the complaint is resolved in your favour you'd then need to work out if its cheaper to continue the new policy with it noted that the cancellation was reversed or if its cheaper to cancel that policy and start afresh (or if its just a cancellation of the new policy as the old one was reinstated)
  • They mentioned reason:  The damage to your vehicle is not consistent with the reported incident circumstances.
My understanding is if policy is cancelled then it should say Uninsured on Askmid but it says insured. So I am bit confused my policy is really cancelled or not!
