Very hard one for me personally.

I thought long and hard before getting a dog - for about 3 years to be honest so even after 1 day I couldn't have sent him back, whatever the situation, we had wanted one for a long time. I split with his 'Dad' when my boy was 2. We have an odd, but workable arrangement where I still take him for a walk each day as I work from home and he takes him out for a walk in the evening. I would never give up on that either, a dog is a big commitment. I don't necesarily agree they are expensive though as they grow up. Jabs cost £30 a year, pet insurance starts at £8 or so a month, walks are free, flea stuff is about £5 once a year, maximum - much cheaper than a child!!

However, if it was a rash/hasty decision and you really don't think the dog can be a part of the family for the next 10-15 years (depending on the breed), it is best for the dog to be returned to the breeder and then re-homed. Much fairer on the dog. Not sure how you'd stand with a refund, you may have to sell him/her yourself, but you'll have the problem of the new family not seeing him/her with Mum and Dad.

I think you should speak to breeder as they may have had a waiting list, rather than rehome it yourself, and you might get all your money back. well done on a tough decision.... and think of the stress you will save yourself.Puppies are a nightmare, peeing and chewing etc etc.
but I think I'd tell the kids that the puppy missed his mum!

I would also rehome the puppy, I'm going to get slated for this, but its a dog, and you cannot afford it at this time, I think you are making a brave decision in wanting to re-home it. You, your children and your home should take top priority. It is not at all like getting rid of one of the children in my opinion, don't feel guilty about it.

I had two dogs, only got the one now, as my new pup, cost £500, had unknown to me and the breeder had numerous problems and was uninsurable, so we took the pup back for a refund, I couldn't afford the operations he needed, he had a serious heart defect and was only detected at 20 weeks, so the breeder took him back and rehomed him for free to someone who could afford to pay for the operations he needed.

I agree, tell the children the puppy is missing his mummy.

So cute, I love Staffies but I don't think my 2 springers would love it as much. I think that you are going to have to sell ( Staffys are sellable ). You will have to get insurance etc and it is just more paying out and at this present time you can't afford it.
Saying that I could never ever get rid of my dogs ( I'd starve first ! ).
  • Its sad that people think it's ok to give up animals. The children will be very upset no matter how little they seem to have bonded.
