ARGOS! told me "you get what you pay for"

Options
 Can't believe the conversation I've just had with Argos on the phone. I bought a mattress -' luxury firm orthopaedic', apparently, unfortunately I'm outside of the thirty days since buying it, (November), so am not guaranteed a refund. It is basically a hard springy nightmare, but they won't let me have a refund only an exchange. I tried telling them it does not fit it's description of luxury only to have the rep tell me that it was extremely cheap at £115! I asked her if she meant that as it was cheap it must be crap and she said , 'you get what you pay for'. Fuming. I will probably have to buy another mattress from them as don't think there's any other option, but WHAT A CHEEK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Cheeky perhaps but true.

A £115 matress is not really going to be any good. Perhaps take up their offer on an exchange and use it to buy a better matress?

Why on earth did you buy a mattress from Argos?!?! Go to a bed shop and try them all out, and THEN order one! £115 isn't that expensive for a mattress. A decent orthapedic one will set you back ALOT more than that...

It seems cheeky to use it for a month then decide you don't like it - it's a risk you take buying such an item from a non specialist shop.

I'm afraid you might just have to put this one down to experience, as personally I think they're being kind offering you a replacement, as it's not actually faulty - you just don't like it!

You do get what you pay for, and a GOOD mattress will set you back around £400 - £500. Perhaps they'll let you exchange it for a more expensive one, and you can make up the difference, but for £115 you're not going to get much more than a springy thing.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Exactly. I was looking for a mattress the other day and wanted more or less the cheapest I could find. It was £88, so £115 would have hardly got you luxury!
  • It was rather rude of her to say what she did (whether it's true or not), but if you've had the mattress since November why has it taken you so long to decide you don't like it. I think Argos are being more than generous by offering you a replacement.
  • Just to echo, its kind of rude of them to say that about a product uv'e bought, but at the same time with it being 2 months ago a replacement is all id expect really! Its frustrating but at the same time if theres no fault then its just your definition of luxury compared to theirs im afraid.

Ive had terrible customer service sometimes (as in the person themsevles sighing ect) tho they are human, ask to speak to someone else you might head you in another direction?

I was in a furniture store recently and a woman was asking for the cheapest mattresses they had. The assistant was telling her that you get what you pay for etc and when I stuck my head around the wardrobe I was examining ... I knew her! She didn't see me so I hung back and listened:rotfl: :rotfl: She was telling him they were "ONLY for a cottage we let out for holidays" I know for a fact that she charges between £650 and £1000 a WEEK for people to come on holiday (depending on season).

I suppose she thinks they'll be good enough for holiday use but I think she's a real cheapskate!!:p
  • To answer some of the points; It was reduced by about £20, but I don't generally know what to expect when paying for mattresses as it's not a common purchase and I've never had problems in the past and not paid out loads. I didn't use it straight away and the reason it's taken me so long to get back to them about it is basically because I am not altogether together at the moment as I have a young baby who isn't very well, so obviously I have other priorities in life! I realise I'll probably have to do a part ex, it was just the attitude of the sales woman that bugged me. To quote from another page on here - "Being a MoneySaver doesn't mean you have to accept worse service. Cheaper isn't worse, you have exactly the same rights and expectations as any other customer. " I shouldn't have bought it from Argos tho', blame my oh for that! Thanks for all the support.

It may be worth calling them back and seeing if they'll exchange for credit vouchers instead of a straight swap on a mattress? Tell them that you think you may try some other mattresses out before buying this time.

That way you can then shop around for your mattress wherever you want to (including Argos if you still want to if you find a particular model you like that they stock?) and perhaps use the vouchers for other purchases that are perhaps more suitable from a shop like Argos?

Give it a go......if you don't ask, you don't get.
