Problem is though as your room temps drop you have lost the "fight" with this cold weather to last another 10days at least you will have problems trying to recover the temps... so if it was me I would be using the system for heating and your electric immersion for the hot water if this is the same tank as it wont have to work so hard to do the hot water then as the tank will be warm.

Perhaps give it a helping boost iwth the gas fire running.

That's a very good point - and I do prefer my radiator heat, cosy, if you know what I mean.

I'm going to leave it off to see if it kicks in before it reaches freezing point - for curiosities sake really. Then I'll start it up and leave the immersion on for the tank.

Hence why you have kept it running 24/7 this long! Dont give up now just give it a little help by taking the hot water load off of it.

Do the immersion and heat pump share the same hot water tank? So if i u was to heat the tank with the immersion then this should take part load off of it?

  • When my system was working even with the ducts in the ceiling it used to warm up my flat from cold to hot in 15 minutes. Was very very quick. This was towards the end of October and obviously not in these temps. Once i have the system up and running i will be able to give better figures with times etc.

I understand concerns about hot air being pushed down but doesn't really seem to be a problem. I feel even heat all around, I think my system has 3 vents to suck air in too to make sure the heat is evenly distributed.

Yeh I suspect the outlet grilles are the high velocity ones, meaning they have a small outlet but the air comes out like a jet:

Do yours look a bit like this:

The way the air comes out is in a jet and is supplied at high pressure.

A lot of the American systems have diffusers like this: Air is supplied at low speed and whilst this is good for cooling as cold air is heavier so naturally falls to lower levels, heat rises so if not pushed to the floor it will stay at ceiling level.

I know the system does work (High level heat sources) it's just an a**-about-face way of doing things. It's illogical captain.
I once lived in a house (in WSM as it happens) which had a gas fired warm air system. This had outlet grilles in the floors of the upstairs rooms - bloody brilliant!

Yes but that was for heating, if you then had cooling also which the Americans mainly use for cooling then you would be freezing ur feet off whilst ur head would be hot as the cold air would stay at floor level.

  • i can't add attachments ( how many posts do i need till i can) but when i can i will post some pics of the whole system. Need to get back to the flat first! It's similar to the jet you have posted but has a mushroom like cover in the middle . You can turn the mushroom in and out so you can control the airflow to some extent. The air diffuses from the side sides of the mushroom.

Well I'll just sit on the floor then, but I can't sit on the ceiling!
Honestly Rich, when do you ever need to pay for cooling in this country (I mean domestic). I am a lizard.

Like this: SHould be used for extraction or exhaust, if you go in public toilets or anywhere public they have these in the toilets.

I always use my air con for cooling in summer, I love being able to have a cool bedroom.

Im always hot and about march is when my air con starts being used, the house gets a lot of heat from downstairs flats and opposite in winter it loses heat.

I have large bay windows that in summer bedrooms can get to 36C on a morning so need the air con.
