OS Thread 24th January 2006

Hi, this is the Daily Thread for 24th January 2008. This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything OS and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an OS natter. The more the merrier!

When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem, we’re a laid back bunch here so you won’t hear any complaints. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” type start does just as well.

****************************************************************

Well I am awake, went to bed but cannot sleep.................

Earlier tonight I logged on to our Nationwide account to check some figures, here was a message which says in effect that they are introducing new security measures which are going to require new cards and card readers in order to be able to complete some internet transactions.

Anyone who has a debit card issued before 2007 will get a new card, the issue of these cards starts this month, but I have copied the next two bits from the email

(In readiness for this change, we may need to replace your existing Visa debit card, even if it’s not due for renewal. If your Visa debit card was issued before November 2007 you’ll get a new one between 21 January and 5 May 2008.

Please have a look at our frequently asked questions. This is particularly important if you’re travelling abroad for more than 3 weeks from 25 March 2008 as you may need to contact us.)

Now our cards are due for renewal in May which would not normally concern us, BUT we are due to go to France on April 28th........and as we have this account so that we can draw cash or pay with the Debit card and not have to pay any fees I did what it said and contacted the CSD.

The chap on the phone blithly informed me that ' the changes mean that you will not be able to transer maney from your on line savings account and will probably be denied access to funds if you use your card in an ATM either at home or abroad until you have the new debit card and card reader'

Whats this means in effect is that if you are travelling abroad after 25th March and you have not been issued with your card and reader you have to either buy travellers cheques, use an alternative account on which you will be charged or walk about with reams of Euros hanging out of your pocket.

I canot say that I was impressed, the whole point of the account, which they loudly advertise on TV, is that you are not charged if you draw cash from an ATM when on holiday abroad.................so what the H*** is the point of the account if your money is ring fenced because they want to change the system?????????????????????????

I have been trying to think of a way round the situation, but as yet have not come up with a solution other than transferring the money for our holiday into the flex acount and then getting euros to take with us.........not a happy thought. I hate travelling with a lot of money 'on my person' much prefer to draw what cash we need each day, that way if you do get mugged y or targetted by pickpockets you do not run the risk of loosing a lot of dough.

Sorry rant over.................

My mind is just refusing to shut down, OH is driving the pigs to market (snoring) and I have a headache....................

Right I am off to make a cuppa and have a trawl through some of the quiling sites, see if that settles me down a bit................

  • Good morning everyone - can someone pass the matchsticks for my eyelids :p DD is off to Barcelona on a school trip, flight at 7am, so she needs to be at school at 2am :p I'm hoping she'll be ready soon, so that I can go back to bed :p

Csarina, can you not ask Nationwide to issue you with a new card  I'm sure they'd rather do that than lose your business.

I'll be baking and ironing later.

See you all when it gets to a more sensible time

Edit - awake again, though I feel a bit muggy-headed. Just read the end of yesterday's thread, and congratulations to Aussie on your new arrival

    Morning All

    (second attempt)
Awake early, think it the result of spending most of yesterday on the settee under a duvet (in 19deg's) but do feel clearer headed (is that English?)and a bit livelier for it. Did someone mention TL's yesterday, maybe need to think that way if sneezing continues IYKWIM. TMI I know.

Thanks Csarina, I will need to look into that for I used both the DC and CC abroad. Though I have set up telephone banking in case I cannot get to a PC (or screw up my logon as I did before) to tranfer from one account to another. BTW my DH is doing the same.

Pen-Pen Hope you managed to get a bit more sleep too.

    ((hugs)) all - Take care

    Morning all!
Have slept quite well, but wide awake now!
Didn't get to bed till 11.15 as had to pick up DS from his new job, which doesn't finish till 10.30pm:eek:

Got to take my car in to Kwik-Fit today, the exhaust is blowing, it sounds like an F1 car:rotfl:

Went to see Mum and Dad yesterday. Mum wasn't good. The feeding is working, but she's still weak, and her neck muscles are so bad. She had her head on her chest and couldnt' hold it up properly. Even the collar she's got didn't work.
I'm hating seeing her like this, I don't know what to do for the best. till, I'll keep going.

My legs are not too bad, still buzzing, but I did rest yesterday.

Hope you all have a good day!

Good Morning all! Hope Czarina and PenPen managed to get to sleep eventually. WE're with Nationwide too, so will be looking into that myself. DG _ hope you feel really better again soon.
Hilstep, sorry to hear about your Mum, it's awful not being able to actually do anything to make things right, isn't it? Having visited my Mum on Sunday, I came away so upset - she really has no quality of life at all these days, and no prospect of things improving.
Late day today - governors' meeting this evening, so not worth coming home in between. Likely to actually be at school for more than 14 hours today! Usually only 10. Ah well, soon be the w/e again! So apart from washing and ironing, which I've already done, no time for anything else today!
Hope everyone has a good day - and (((HUGS))) for all who need one.

    Morning all!

Gosh, it's going to be a long one today. I have a full day and then parents evening until 8pm.... urghhhhh. I only have about 8 appointments (some have 40, eek!) and they're all spaced out because of the variety of jobs the parents do, so hopefully that'll encourage me to get some work done in-between appointments.

Hopefully OH will cook dinner for us tonight, I can show him how to use the rice cooker and he can make us sweet and sour chicken. Then I can collapse in front of the TV until I fall asleep!

    Have a good day everyone.

    Good morning everyone.

HILSTEP and BEEMUZED - (((Hugs))) to your Mums. It's so hard not being able to do anything.

    DONNY-GAL - glad you're feeling better.

TATTYCATH - hope your DD is feeling a lot better today.

AUSSIE - congratulations on the new arrival!

CSARINA - I would phone again and ask to speak to someone else, higher up the chain of authority. That just doesn't sound right; from the end of March, the holiday season starts hotting up and they surely don't intend to mess up everyone's plans? The chap you spoke to said you will 'probably' be denied access...... Sounds as if he is not sure himself so it would be worth anothe phone call.

Well, I slept quite well again. Although I was longing for a caffeinated drink after 8.30 I resisted the urge and I'm sure that's helping. I need all my wits about me because we have decided to try and trim down our outgoings so I need to phone around for insurance quotes. My DH's public liability has gone up a lot this year; we have used the same company for ages but will see if we can get it cheaper. The same for our car insurances. I shall go through Quidco for the quotes and try and get some pennies back. Our home and life insurances are OK but it's all the other ones that seem to be going through the roof.

I also need to give the house a good going over. I can't go out anywhere because DH has taken my car; it's cheaper to run than his - at the moment he's working 50 miles away and it's costing £25 a day in his 4x4 which is ridiculous. He saves about £4 a day using mine so it makes more sense. I can walk up to the local shop easily, anyway. If I don't have the car I'm not tempted to to go where there are lots of shops!

Anyway, off for a shower so see you all later.

((((Hugs)))) Hilstep, so sorry to hear about your Mum, I know how hard it is to see your parents suffer and not be able to do anything.

Just heard that Michael Underwood is out of Dancing on Ice as he has broken his ankle

Nipping to Asda today for some bits and pieces, but must try not to walk down the book aisle :D

Not sure what's for tea, need a bit of inspiration while I'm shopping.

    Good morning everyone!

Thanks Charlies mum for that info re Michaels ankle I went online to read more about it and it's not anywhere!! It must really be breaking news!!!
Long day at work, but kids enjoy after school club so that works ot well. Will do them a quick tea afterwards depending on what they fancy and I don't eat dinner with anyone on Thursdays as it's my weigh in so will just get DH something out of freezer that's 'one I made earlier!'

Is it just me or are there lots of teachers and nurses on this board?? Just reading what people have written eg today looks like some teachers and I'm a nurse is that coincidence or have I just noticed or is it because it's still early in the morning and my brain is confused!??

    Have good days everyone xxx
