I think the nicest ones I've had are Heinz - but I do only buy them when they're on offer.

I have some shelves in my garage where I keep my stock of bogof/half price bargains that I can't fit into my kitchen cupboard - I call it my 'Corner Shop' and could probably feed the whole neighbourhood on tuna, soup, tomatoes, beans, cat food for months in the case of an emergency.

it all depends on where im shopping at the time my usuals are morrisons/sainsburys and tescos and i always buy the basics

  • I only buy sainsburys basics which seem ok to me, but I only use them for sauces. I also buy passata but forget to freeze it then end up throwing it away. Must be more efficient. However my step daughter was visiting today and wanted tomatoes on toast for lunch. all I had was sainsburys basics chopped tomatoes, so I gave her those. She said it was very nice and ate it all, so they must be ok. Personally I wouldn't eat tomatoe on toast for any money the thought makes me shudder.

  • I can't tell any difference between Napolino and Tesco's own make (not Value).
And they both invariably have at least one tomato with a bit of skin on which I don't like. I also cut out the bit where the stalk's been because it's tougher. That's why I don't buy chopped tomatoes because you can't tell what's in them (skin wise).

I used some dirt cheap own-brand plum toms in my SC (first SC meal!) today. I have to say, when I took the lid off I was shocked - the sauce looked really thick! Wish I could remember where they came from but they would have been either Morrisons Bettabuy or Sainsbury's Basics.

Can't even fish the can out of the recycling as it was collected today. Oh dear...!

    And they tasted fab!
Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realise that we cannot eat money.

I am so relieved.. I'm not quite to strange after all... a tomato is a tomato.. I hate them all with equal dislike.. icky things.. we use tesco value chopped ones.. never had any that are just juice though.. you watch the 6 tins in my cupboard will be just that.. not a tomato in sight.

I am considering buying the plum tomatoes and whizzing up my own.. but hubby thinks that is going to far.. so I'll do it when he isn't looking!

bolognese etc I do add puree as well though..

  • This post reminded me that I need to stock up on tinned toms - M&S organic plum toms (59p at tin) are best for flavour imho after trying loads of brands (well actually Puma is best but the rice per tin is just ridiculous!!) so off I went - been 3 times in the past week and they are still sold out :( grrrrrrrrrrrr plus they were 49p a tin last time I stocked up......hmm

If I am having them as veg then Napolina. If in a sauce any of them. I luv tinned toms and bacon and will easily eat a tin to myself with white (has to be white) bread and butter to mop up the juice. It is a treat so I don't mind paying a bit more.
