what do you guys use tinned toms for... spag bol? pizza tioppings. im thinking about trying hm pizza and spag bol, what else would you put in flavouring wise
Spag bol - i saute a chopped onion, add mince and brown, then add a red oxo cube, splash of lea and perrins, good squirt of tomato puree, pinch of mixed herbs and the chopped toms along with a bit of water. Bring to the boil and simmer for 30 mins. Season to taste.
Tomato sauce - Tinned toms, celery, carrot, red lentils, onion, garlic, tsp of sugar, mixed herbs, any other veg needing using. Simmer for 30 mins until liquid is reduced then blend until smooth. I freeze this in portions for pasta, as a topping for ciabatta pizzas, to add to browned mince to make spag bol, add extra stock to make soup etc - All to have to hand in the freezer for DD on nights when OH is working late and we dont eat until way past her bedtime.
Spicy Tomato and lentil soup - chuck a chopped onion, tinned toms, red lentils, tomato puree, lea and perrins, ground coriander, mixed herbs, veg stock plus anything else needing using like the odd carrot/pepper all into the slow cooker and cook on low for 6 hours. Blend until smooth.
Also used for chilli con carne, same as spag bol but with kidney beans and chilli powder added. Sorry theres no real measurements for anything but i tend to just chuck things in a hope for the best!
Oh and at the moment i'm loving tinned plum tomatoes on toast and smothered in vinegar - but that just may be a pregnancy thing lol :rotfl:

......sauces, casseroles, ratatouille type things, soupe de poisson, paella...usually have a stock of frozen home grown toms but last season was so poor that ran out long ago!our home grown sauce has run out. I find its so sweet anyway, I have to temper it with some tinned ones.

At the moment smartprice plum tomatoes are cheaper than the chopped ones so i buy the tins of plum and squidge them up.
Same here, get a much thicker consistency. I tend to just give them a wizz using my hand blenderPrevious debt: £14K :embarasse Debt free: Sept '03MFW#42 Mortgage OP savings £4271.18/£12000 2019

Is it really sad that I was lying in bed last night thinking about starting a thread about this very topic?
I used to buy Aldi tinned tomatoes for 14p a can and they were great- good tomatoes and really thick tomato juice, so sauces never really needed reducing that much. They were just as good if not better then Napolina tinned tomatoes. I've now discovered they don't do the whole ones and the chopped ones are 26p a can!
I've tried Asda's tinned plum tomatoes and thought that they were really watery and my cooking ended up sloppy.
I need to find some good quality cheap tinned tomatoes0 -
We have the heinz ones at the moment - from an offer in tescos ages ago and they are really good. I wouldn't buy them full price but when they are on offer (or the napolina ones) on-line I buy a cupboard full. Failing that the chopped ones from lidl are fine.:staradmin:starmod: beware of geeks bearing .gifs...:starmod::staradmin:starmod: Whoever said "nothing is impossible" obviously never tried to nail jelly to a tree :starmod:0

I'm glad it's not just me that stocks up with half price tins LOL, we use Tesco value but if you want a tastier tom for a full english it's got to be half price Napolina.
Just got 30 or so in my siege cupboard LOL.0 -
I use Heinz or Napolina, I really don't like the cheaper ones there is a definate difference in the meals you cook with cheaper ingredients. Having said that, I tend to only buy the good ones in bulk when they are on offer;)Trying to be frugal and sensible with my pennies.0

Right... thats it, I'm for a troll of Heinz or Napolina tomatoes on spesh!0
