As others have said above, I can't compromise on real coffee and non- smartprice teabags.

I've managed to downshift to the bottom brand level on everything else! Still, the cupboards look chicly coordinated all in their green and white matching outfits! :T

So I am sat here drinking posh cafetiere coffee with week past it's sell by date whoopsied long-life skimmed milk in it! Crazy eh?:o

Fully agree on meat & eggs having to be FR, and coffee of a decent quality. And I would buy Ecover cleaning products if they were on sale here, but they aren't. Still all of our cleaning stuff has to be eco-friendly because we have a septic tank (limits the choice of toilet paper too), and kitchen sink, WM and DW drain straight into nature!
Otherwise I don't think I'm fussy about anything really, but funny enough my OH will not compromise on The Cats! He personally chooses their cat food - and definitely not the cheapest, and our Persian is the only one in the family who gets paid-for haircuts at the groomers', whereas for us a friendly lady next door does the honours. I know it is daft..... :-)

Oops my problem is I am tight and yet don't like compromise, this was great until the world and his womble got wise to the reduced stuff in the supermarkets. In my job I travel all over the place and my idea of a break is going into the local supermarket to get bargains.......certain Sainsburys have such poor stock control it's almost criminal the amount they reduce.........well not for me.
    Main none compromises are
Petit Pois, that's the OH influence, they don't have to be Birds Eye though.
Ringtons tea, delivered to your door in black and gold vans.....nectar.
    Free range Meat and eggs
Kleenex tissues, although they are a bit cheaper than OB you get about 25 less in a box.............worth it though.
    Heinz tomato soup
Oh and the OH buys coffee pods on line so heaven knows what that costs.
But anything else is whatever is cheapest.
  • I, too ,thought we bought the cheapest of everything, but then I realised we only buy:
    Proper Marmite
    Gold Blend coffee
    Fairy washing up liquid
    free range eggs
Ariel/Persil -but mixed 3:1 with supermarket OB
    Tesco Finest sausages
Make my own yoghurt but only use Yeo Valley organic as starter
a kiwifruit on my cereal every morning
    Leather shoe
Rocket - but will try growing our own this year
Yorkshire loose tea for hard water
Always use filtered water for tea/coffee/drinking
Toni and Guy Iron-it spray when using hair straighteners
    Bird's custard powder
  • I like Charles Worthington volumising shampoo for my hair but I use a cheaper shampoo for the 'first' wash then don't need to use so much for the last wash. Think I save quite a bit doing this.

You really only need to wash your hair once hence saving even more!

Cheap meat products. I'd rather have no meat than cheap rubbish.

Couldn't agree more. For the first few months living here I scoured the supermarket shelves for cheaper meat, but in the end figured that I spend so much time preparing our meals from scratch that it was pointless to try for good food with poor quality meat. Now I buy at the local butcher (the only one left in town), his mince is cheaper, sausages all hand made and delicious and we support a local business.

I can't compromise on certain things:
Organic bananas - they taste so much better than normal ones, can't go back now.
Heinz Beans - just no other like it
    HP Brown Sauce
    Kelloggs Cornflakes
Richmond sausages but buy frozen bag (£1.49 for 20) of them as opposed to the fresh ones, so much cheaper.
Organic lean mince meat, tastes less chewy than normal lean mince.
    Vimto
    Weetabix

    I do compromise on:
I buy Aldi''s Aloe Vera toilet rolls 6 rolls for £2.19 but are nicer than any other brands; they smell nice and are quite think.
Asda's bran Flakes and Fruit & Fibre taste just the same as Kelloggs
Decaff Tetley tea - tastes same as normal Tetley but no caffeine
Asda's Olive Marg Spread instead of Bertolli - has same amount of fat, cals etc but tonnes cheaper.
    Aldi's bacon 99p

I've only scanned this thread, but it seems to be the same few brands that keep popping up - and I agree with them.

We have to have Heinz Beans, Heinz Organic ketchup, proper Shreddies, Birds Eye Peas and Kelloggs Cornflakes.

Everything else can be pretty much any brand there is, although I do go for fairtrade/organic/eco/free range whenever possible, and draw the line at most 'value' lines (we've tried them, just don't get on with them).

Looking at my post I think I know why I am broke..........not enough compromise but I do like good food..............hence my weight.
If you like organic I have just got a great deal via my Telegraph subscription forDaylesford organics meat and veg box half price and when I have had their stuff before it was lovely. Yup I see again why I am broke.
I think for April I am going to go Italian and make loads of Pasta sauce and whilst Lloyd Grossman's are good home made is always better.
