I don't compromise on supermarket shopping generally, although I've got it pared down so that I spend as little as possible.
For various ethical reasons, I avoid Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's etc and do the monthly shopping at Waitrose. However, by shopping online, menu planning, cleaning Old Style (vinegar, soda crystals and lemon juice - all I need!), not eating meat and making things from scratch rather than buy ready-made, I spend less in a month with Waitrose than I used to spend at Tesco. And it's tastier.
More specifically, my mother always told my brother and I never to compromise on bread, toilet roll, bin liners or meat.
I'd also add moisturiser to the list as the cheapo stuff makes my face go greasy."I'm not a one-trick pony. I'm not a ten-trick pony. I'm a whole field of ponies - and they're all literally running towards this job."

Free-range.
Ethics and what-not aside, taste and nutrition-wise there's a big difference between a free roaming animal eating a natural diet and one that's been crammed in a barn and fed on cheap grains.
I'll have cheap anything except meat and eggs, this means spending more on it and eating less of it but I think that's how meat should be treated anyway.0 -
I have to agree on the following:
Heinz Ketchup - nothing else comes close
Fairy Liquid - just re-converted to this, and it's lasting for ages
Colman's English Mustard (can't believe no one mentioned this, supermarket own ones are vile)
Twinings everyday teabags (on offer at Asda at the moment) yummy
If I must do instant coffee, then doewe egberts or Kenco rapport
Any old dishwasher tablet will do (and cut it in half as discovered on this site)
oh and....beanz meanz heinz!!!0 -
Caviar. The cheap stuff just doesn't cut it tbh.
Agree on the ketchup btw. We've been using cheap stuff but it's too vinegary and just not nice. Back to heinz next time.0 -
This thread is making me question all the branded stuff I buy.
Main Brands I buy are:
Fairy liquid from costco
Lenor
Bold
Will buy most other cleaners own brand or get them from savers/on offer
Get shampoo/conditioner (timito) on bogof or £1 deal at Tesco
Got to recommend ASDA shades toilet paper - its great
Kitchen towels from poundland - nicky - lasts ages
buy shredded wheat bitesize - doesnt really seem to be an own brand alternative
Bread - buy scottish pride plain for weeknds - cant beat it for toast
Butter - anchor light spreadable
coffee - kenco decaf
gotta be Napolini chopped tomatoes - own brands just dont taste the same
Caldron foods
Bisto veggie gravy
Scottish Blend tea - pyramid
rest of shopping is mainly fresh foods or own brand versions
can be fussy but if i dont have the cash for shopping, will buy as cheap as i need to.:j Debt-Free-Wannabe! :jDeclutter/Ebay/Savings0 -
Asda diet cola - you can be fooled into thinking it "coke" not the rola cola from other supermarkets. Went off proper coke.
Fresh yeast in bread - Dried yeast tastes "yeasty"
Nescaff cap colobie (sp)
Asda Extra special chunky oven chips - nothing like it at all, 6 chips is a meal.
Eggs - Never by from any supermarket after tasting eggs from my organic farm shop (400yrds from home).
Tyres - Vredistien sportrac 3, good in dry but like nothing else in the wet.
Wiper blades - hate squeeky wipers.
Tesco boxer shorts - comfy!Lets get this straight. Say my house is worth £100K, it drops £20K and I complain but I should not complain when I actually pay £200K via a mortgage:rolleyes:0 -
for me the one thing i wont compramise on has to be coffee. it has to be good quality and i dont do instant!!Dogs return to eat their vomit, just as fools repeat their foolishness. There is no more hope for a fool than for someone who says, "i am really clever!"0

Coffee - must be good, never instant. Taylors of Harrogate, and if I feel really rich, then the best one Monmouth Coffee Company. Bitterly expensive, but sooooo delicious, I have it as a treat once a week.
Kallo stock cubes - great in soups, stews, just lovely.
Shampoos and conditioners - cheapies make my hair look and feel like straw
Meat - must be organic, otherwise I'll eat vegetables
Eggs - organic and free range
Toilet paper, paper towels - must be plush, soft ones.
Fabric conditioner - adore Comfort blue, smells divine
Anything for my face and body - but I don't use much, so lasts forever. And often bought on e-bay.
Milk - organic, preferrably Yeo Valley.
Toothpaste - Colgate
Ecover cleaning products - sooo expensive, but love them, great stuff
I am very picky when I shop, but I believe in quality over quantity. Whenever I tried to substitute with economy stuff, it ended up being "false economy". Except for Stardrops (thanks MSF!), they are brilliant, but still need my Ecover for few other cleaning purposes.0
