I can second the recommendation for Lidl parboiled rice - it always cooks perfectly. If I hadn't switched almost exclusively to brown rice, I'd have recommended it on the list I posted earlier on this thread.

Most value things I'm fine with, but there are some things I buy branded/not value.

Fairy washing up liquid. My friend (who very very occasionally washes my dishes) has bad eczema and he says Fairy isn't as bad on his hands as other brands.

Asda Shades toilet paper. I have a couple of value rolls in for emergencies, but I much prefer this.

Asda Natural Extracts shampoo/conditioner. I love the smell of the coconut one, and my hair is really soft and shiny.

I'm not too fussy, really :)

cant compromise on tea bags, Ive tried the cheapies and they are all urghh, mind I tend to stock up on tetley/typhoo/pg tips when they are on offer so I never pay full price for these any way

Have tried cheap cola and dont like it so it has to be full fat coca cola for me

also wont compromise on marmite and sunpat crunchy peanut butter

and after a bad experience with asdas own I wont try any other cheapie versions of horlicks.

Other than that I'll try most of the value brands for everything else :)

An example: I only own one pen, but it is one of the Fisher AG7 astronaut pens, as used in space and on the Moon. It is superbly engineered and works first time, every time. OK, I will never go into space, but it is the only pen that can write upside down when I'm doing cryptic crosswords in bed. I got it from the US and, including $10 postage, I paid approximately the same in dollars as it would have cost me in pounds in the UK. It has a lifetime guarantee. When it got damaged, I sent it back to the manufacturer's agent in the UK and it was replaced free of charge.

What did you write with whilst it was being replaced? :rotfl:

For perfect rice use Basmati. Put a knob of butter or tbsp of any oil, flavoured ones are good, put in your rice and allow it to be coated in the oil, then add exactly twice the amount of boiling water, put on the lid, turn to low and leave for 15 mins.......do not peek. After 15 mins perfect fluffy rice.
For variety put garlic in the oil or for a milder flavour add with the water.

porridge - i buy sainsburys taste the difference for 89p a bag(naturally sweeter and slightly nuttier taste - no need for sugar or anything else). i tried the regular porridge for 39p but the lo wouldn't eat it and ended up throwing it away.

instant coffee - i get tesco or sainsburys gold roast - its the same as nescafes gold roast. i tried cheaper own brand - it was disgusting - so again it went in the bin.

I put shampoo and conditioner in some old pump action containers so that the amount used is measured, what used to last a week now lasts for 3.

I'm really grateful for this tip. My 18-year-old son gets through tons of shampoo even though he has a very short haircut. I think using the pump action top will slow him down a bit when he's sloshing the shampoo around! Cheers !!!
  • I use Sommerfield basic washing powder (£1.56 for a really big box) to wash colours and a biological powder for the whites. Can't stand that eco stuff, a total waste of money.
  • I am really fussy with coffee, Bounty and washing powder, but have recently converted too:

    Asda/Sainsburys instant coffee if desperate
    Waitrose Non-bio powder
Disney kitchen towel from the 99p store

not much saved but something I suppose:D

The 99p store also have in:

    Nescafe 100g
26 drawstring good quality black bin bags
    Ziplock bags (80)
Nice N Fresh concentrated air freshner (excellent!)
    3 x Tuna (dolphin friendly)
    DW tablets (24)
