What things can't you compromise on?

  • Im a student so theres not much i dont mind compromising on. the main things i do buy is branston beans and proper milk not UHT.

I never have bacon in my house cos im so fussy about it, it has to be drycure or sweetcure fresh from the butchers and it costs quite a lot really. I get it when loans come thru and treat myself to a sarnie, lol.

Im also a bit funny about juice I dont like to buy cheap cordials but i have found a heron just down the road from me that sells juicee for 69p for a 2 litre bottle so i buy that now.

I am a bit fussy about cheese aswell, ill happily buy value chedder, but ideally i would prefer to buy really good garlic and herb soft goats cheese, theres a dairy out in raywell that sells the most amazing goats cheese and milk. even yoghurt and butter. Id love it if i could afford to get all my dairy there. I cant drive tho so i can never get there unless my mum takes me.
  • I try to be good, I really do...

    Ok, here we go:

Tomato soup - ghot to be heinz (only when i have a cold though)
Brown sauce - I'm an HP girl
Noodles - OH likes the sharwoods ones, so I get them from Home Bargains (same with soy sauce etc actually. and lazy ginger!)
Washing up liquid - my bottle of fairy i bought in Dec is still half ful, its good value!
Washing tablets - I have sensitive skin. On offer!
loo roll - Tesco's "soft" though, and multipacks, and on offer lol
Bread - mr Ts value bread is sooo dry. I buy a decent brand on offer and freeze in 4 slice portions
Butter - has to be President, (well, the French supermarkets equivalent) - I buy it in France and freeze
Mustard - Maille all the way (buy in France)
Meat - I buy from my trusted butcher. Bulk it out with all manner of tricks lol.
Eggs - free range. Even more committed to that since the programmes
Baked beans - we like branston. I buy when they're on offer. I use value to cook with though

    Things I don't mind about:

Shoes - I wear safety boots all day everyday to work. Not much you can do to that them look funky
Undies - save a few pretty sets, Tesco cheap and cheapful cotton multipacks.
Toilet/ bathroom/ kitchen cleaner - bleach is bleach...

I'll give most things a try to see if they are as good as/any better than my preferred brands. However, having tried alternatives I now only use:

    Always Ultra sanitary towels
Aveda shampoo/conditioner (super sensitive scalp so it's the only thing I can use)
Decent facial/skin products - sensitive skin again. Brands vary depending on product, but I have got it down to what I can use - buy it off ebay usually cos it aint cheap!!
Heinz Tommy K (don't like their beans though)
    Free range eggs
Decent meat- NEVER buy value stuff or those 2 for £5 type chickens

And I have found that large household purchases, you get what you pay for so I save up and get decent furniture, carpets ect.
  • I notice quite a few people not compromising on kitchen roll. I have never bought a kitchen roll in my life so I don't need to worry about compromising on that. What do you all use it for? I can't see what you need it for really.

In response to the question about what to use kitchen roll for:

Hygienic way of mopping up spillages (without having stuff breeding on a cloth)
Something to stand frozen food on to catch the drips when I'm thawing it out
If I have microwaved a single portion meal in a box with a lid, when it's ready to eat I take two sheets of kitchen roll and wrap it around the lid, then stand the box on the lid - again, to catch drips

I don't get through a vast amount of the stuff, but I do find there is a big difference between the Value stuff and decent ones. You can normally get Bounty or Lotus Thirst Pockets dead cheap in bulk from Netto/Aldi/Lidl, though I've just stocked up with the Asda Shades stuff which is meant to be "better than the leading brand".

  • The only item I don't compromise on is bread. I can't stand that raggedy value bread. I discovered though, that Lidl do a loaf of farmhouse bread for about 60p which is just as nice as the warburtons that costs me £1.20 a loaf.
