  • No cheap meat stuff , like battery chickens or pies with mechanically recovered meat , the thought of it just makes me feel ill, i'd rather eat veggie or organic free range when I can.

I could never compromise on food. Partly because food is the only thing I buy that becomes a literal part of who I am, and partly becuase I hold firm views on animal welfare, human rights, and the environment. Having said that, I have changed the way in which I go about fulfilling my food requirements, in terms of where I buy it, how I grow it, how much of it we use and what can be replaced with something else, so maybe that is a compromise!

OH would never dream of downshifting our loo roll, though I have tried, and he does use premium recycled now, which is better, though not financially. Would you believe, we now have two loo rolls - stuff for him and stuff for me - because as long as I have recycled I don't care how hard it is, so it seemed an extravagance using the same as him :rotfl:

I also wouldn't compromise on OH's hobbies. Having Sky Sports for him is an extravagance, as are all his bits and bobs he buys to go fishing, but he works bloody hard to support me and as we can afford them I am happy for him to have these things. But I guess that has been a compromise in a way, as he knows he has a limit on his 'discretionary' spending, he just happens to choose to spend it on these things.

Other than this I can think of little that we won't/haven't compromise on.

Good/well fitted shoes.. especially for the children.. They walk on their feet forever. Mine are from Evans because nothing else fits.. and I sometimes have trouble with them.. I don't fit in their clothes but their shoes are the only ones I can get my feet in just about.

Keeping warm.. I cannot be cold as I have arthritis.. killer in cold weather... BUT.. instead of slamming the heating on I can use a little heater in one room.

Using the dryer less.. or at least TRYING to use it less.. ok at the moment but in December I might be saying the same!

HM bread.. I don't eat bread but I know it is better for the children so they are not given an option.

We cannot stomach the 'value' cereal but so use the shops own brand.. I don't care what anyone says value cereal won't even be eaten by the birds!!

Fabric conditioner.. lenor or comfort.. I think this is my one big extravagance..

Hugo Boss perfume for me and CK for hubby.. John Frieda shampoo for me.. and Lush smellies.. but these are pretty much restricted to christmas/mothers day etc

Not a great deal really... literally everything we eat/use is value brands or shops own premium brand..

Clothing is a different matter.. I buy next/BHS/evans for all of us because I want it to last forever.. the clothes are often passed through 5 children or more.. I have 1 wearing pjs that went through all the ones older than her.

hmmm, I've been thinking about this one and I would say that instead of compromising on the individual items I am looking harder for deals or going without a bit more but mainly my meals have changed.

I'm back to eating more old style meals of spag bol a million ways, stews, old fashioned benas on toast and a few more salads on sunny days with cakes and bakes thrown in throughout the months. I've done away with fancy (but tasty) recipes that need a million different fancy and expensive ingredients and things that are a real faff. Oh and our portions are better controlled and leftovers get used much more.

I find that what I save on thsee things I am still affording better quality as I'm not buying so much...but how long that will last who knows.

As I'm pg I'm veyr aware of what I'm eating and hubbie and I decided we would rather cut the bills more elsewhere before cutting the shopping bill for fruit and veg. But then we both love our food!!! and I'm not so keen on sky tv :D

as for cleaning products etc, I've made sure that I stick with those I know and like and have one bottle (unless theres an offer on!) rather than a cupbaord full of billions of bottles that don't do much.
