    • Organic / Free Range meat - I used to work in agriculture and have seen too much intensive farming. I will not subsidise it again

How could I have forgotten those?! I get my mum to buy them in Duty Free...
    • Decent (yet recycled) toilet roll
    • Bisto gravy (Tesco OL isn't suitable for vegetarians, but Bisto is)
    • Activia Yoghurts (one of my few treats)
    • Organic tofu (I've yet to find non organic tofu, since one brand seems to have conquered the market)
    • Quorn products
    • Free range eggs

Other than than, it's Tesco Value all the way.

Errrr.....I havent compromised on anything foodwise - its still real coffee (I find instant undrinkable - wish I didnt!), the eggs are still freerange (in my book if I cant afford freerange eggs - then I cant afford eggs full stop and will stop buying them until I can again) and the food is generally as organic as possible (ie the coffee doesnt tend to be - as thats SO dear and not one of the most important things to have organic - but the standard-type pasta, the flour, as much as is available of the fruit and veg, the milk, the standard range of cheeses, cereals, pulses are definitely organic).

Besides that - I could have my hair cut for free - but stick to my normal hairdresser I've had for years (as she is the only one to date that can cut it well enough to look half-decent - wish I had thick easy-to-manage hair! ). I'd only consider changing to the free one if I was "on the dole" desperate.

My economising is in order to get myself financially straight and to get the "economies" up and running ready for the gap between my retirement age and 65 - gulp - trying not to think about just how low the income will be then:eek:

I think I am already economising by not having mortgage/debt/student loan (one thing I havent had), no children, no car, no pets, no smoking, no meat-eating (though thats only partly for financial reasons) and I am doing what I can to keep the bills as low as possible. Make-up is eye make-up only at £2 a shot for items and spend very little on my appearance in fact and social life is of the cheap variety (no "clubbing" or expensive-type hobbies).
  • I wouldnt give up

Decent oil, I buy extra virgin olive oil and also rice bran oil, a decent oil is healthier and makes food taste better, besides it still lasts ages

Can't think of anything else, although I am sure there are things. In saying that in NZ you often find that you can only get one brand of something, eg, yeast, so sometimes you don't have much choice really ...

There isn't anything I don't compromise on, but I don't really consider it a "compromise" more of a step away from consumerism.

for me it has to be soft loo roll and coffee,

apart from them i will compromise on everthing else, but i cant abide cheap coffee, i love my douwe egberts for filter and gold blend for every day drinking
If we can put a man on the moon...how come we cant put them all there?

locally made cheese - one tiny bit of northumberland nettle or cuddy's cave cheeses is worth a whole chunk of plastic cheese so works out the same cost

free range chicken and eggs - I buy less and make them go further

    good bras!
  • PG Tips teabags - nothing else comes close for me (and as I drink gallons of the stuff daily....)
YeoValley spreadable organic butter (I'd rather have a little of that than lots of something else).
    Heinz Ketchup.
Soft loo rolls for me too :)
Bold or Persil (non-bio) washing powder or liquid (other things seem to cause skin reactions in my DD's)

Heating/hot water - mine is set for around 2.5/3 hours morning & late afternoon which is usually plenty & affordable for me (at the moment.. that may change). I hate a "cold" house, so I won't cut back on that unless forced through price rises. But even then I think I would turn the thermostat down a couple of degrees (usually around 22 so would go to 19/20) rather than reduce how long it is turned on for.

That's made me realise I'm not as picky as I thought :) Pretty much everything else is negotiable (not just food but lifestyle too).
