Just found this post, haven't been on the OS board for a wee while.
WOW, Sammy Kaye you are an inspiration - I spent £123 on food shopping this month and there's only me........(feels guilty). Right, that's it I'm getting back on the OS horse!!!0 -
Hi sammy-kaye, I've just found your thread. First of all, congratulations on POTM - well-deserved! You are inspirational for one so young and you are also giving your son valuable lessons in healthy eating that will last him all his life.
In one of your posts you said you were hoping, as you were typing your very first post, that you didn't lose it in the ether. It's so annoying when that happens but I had a tip ages ago from someone on the OS Daily thread (Crazychik) who suggested typing a long post into Word first, saving as you go, then copying and pasting it onto the thread. That way, you won't lose it and, if you get interrupted before you've posted, you can find it again.
Anyway, well done on your achievements!KNIT YOUR SQUARE TOTALS:

Thanks Sammy for a really inspiring read (I've just read all 12 pages through.)
I have a VERY long way to go unfortunately. I'm actually too embarrassed to admit how much I spend for just myself and partner. However, through the tips here and on other threads I hope to halve it.
I'm taking it gradually though. Does anyone else get terrified at the thought of making bread? And I only have one drawer of freezer space which makes life trickier.0 -
Hi I am new here, I have a request lemon curd recipe thank you... now I am
very happy to see so many people all suffering just like me. LOL I am not
alone...yay! I want to know what you all have on recipes for onions.. I was
blessed with 50 lbs of them. I got them at a local veggie place for $5 dollars.
(from the US) They are very lovely (fresh) but thats a lot of onions. Storage
Ideas? I see you said freeze but I only have small freezer on frig. its full too.
I feed a family of 6 on $100 a month. I don't know $ to £ but it takes alot of
brain work. My 12 year old told me that he wishes he was a adult.... sigh.
He has alot to learn. But he is my buddy against spending and has often
talked me out of spending or reminded me of something at home so we do
not buy what we dont need. I never go shoping with out him.... he has and
amazing eye for deals!! I think I am creating a monster. (or he will be some
old cheepscate when he is older..LOL) And he is a wizz at math, he will
do the tax and all then tell me the total bill before we go to pay I guess he
is my calculator. Anyhoo give me Ideas for Lentils and beans grains ect.
because that is how I get by, loads of dry goods in bulk..... I buy rice in
50 lb bags if you eat rice with bean or lentils it is the same as meat in complex protein and Iron and with out all the fats and cholesterol.

Hi iRememberSleep - one way I heard of for storing onions is to put them one at a time into an old pantyhose/stocking and either tying a knot in between each onion or tying with string and then hang them up in a cool place. I for one am looking forward to money saving ideas from across the pond and I love your name - young kids eh????0

1 1/2 cups sugar
4 oz butter (or marg, but not as nice)
2 Lemons juice and rind
2 eggs
put all ingredients except eggs in a basin and stand it in a pan of boiling water until all contents are dissolved. Add well beaten eggs and stir until thick. Cook for about 15 mins. Do not boil.

.
you can dry onions if you have a dehydrator(I think dehydrators are much cheaper in the US than here). Last year our onion crop was so pathetic(really small onions ) that I just peeled them and put them in big jars of vinegar and we had them at christmas for pickled. Will definitely do that again.
Lentil curry is a good cheap dish. No meat just onions, lentils and veg(I use tinned tomatoes if we've got em) and curry powder.served up with boiled rice.0
