YAYYYYYYYY!!!! :j I've finally found the time to catch up
Again very well done Sammy-Kaye :T :T :T
I'm nearly twice your age too and never been any good at money management or cooking either
I've been a member for over a year as well and have come back to the OS forum a few times with good intentions that I've never carried through
But your thread has definitely given me the determination to make a start :T
I'm planning to use your shopping list and menu plan as a base for my own family's needs but change a few things like we're not really chicken fans - I like eating it but not off the bone :rolleyes:and I'll be including cheapy bread for a while until I get in the swing of not relying on takeaways 2 or 3 times a week
Again I can't express how grateful I am - well done you :A :kisses3:You should never call somebody else a nerd or geek because everybody (even YOU !!!) is an"anorak" about something whether it's trains, computers, football, shoes or celebs:rotfl:

Hi Sammy
Cant remember how many times ive read your list now (too many) and ive even been on tesco and tried to get it down a bit more / tried to think what we could do without and i can not get under £130 and thats a push for 2.5 of us (not including my eating for two at the moment!). I will try to lower it though - if your family can manage im going to make sure we do.
thanks for your thread its really insightful and inspiring xMoney's our first priority, it doesn't make sense to me -Simple Plan - CrazyDebt at lightbulb moment 13/12/07 £13820. Debt now 20/02/09 £11316'Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts' DFW Nerd #665'0 -
been lurking on your thread for a while , well done on your post of the month!
keep up the good work.Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, champagne in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming ~ WOO HOO what a ride!0 -
How long do your fresh veggies last you for SK ?
Do you really not buy any more inbetween times...
Also you say you have a roast once a week but on your list there's only a chicken and a pork joint so do these get cooked and then some frozen for the next time or... summat else that I'm missing ?You should never call somebody else a nerd or geek because everybody (even YOU !!!) is an"anorak" about something whether it's trains, computers, football, shoes or celebs:rotfl:

Hiya.
I remember when you first visited MSE!
You are such an inspiration - I think you are more of a masterchef than me from the sounds of it so you should be proud!

Hi Mics_chick.
With regards to the veggies, like Ive said i do have some prebagged stuff in the freezer from working in a coop and getting items reduced but this money used to buy them still comes from my shopping budget but i can get a bag of carrots for 10p somenights so they are all frozen and kept there until needed.
For example - my sunday shift - I had 3 bags of 6 hot cross buns so 18 bun altoghter, a baguette of chuncky bread and a pack of 2 belgian chocolate muffins ALL for 10p - not 10p each as in the total cost of that shop was 10p so bf and ben have been having hot cross buns for breakfast, bf took muffins to work with sandwiches and my and ben had some bread with soup. and thats without the discount card
Also with regards to freshness - i have to admit the only real thigns i dont use all of when i get them are the onions, carrots and potatoes. Im not scared of a bit of sprouting though - I dont bin them or run for the hills if i spot a little sprout - i just cut it off and cook it up (the veg not the sprouting bit) Mushrooms - like ive said i batch cook plan so after ive had my shopping i can batch cook the next day and they are used then thigns are frozen. The same with the soup that has the swede go near enough straight into it. I do have soem cut up ready onion in the freezer too which i tend to do with a few of them - it makes it easier for soup making and pie making - i cna just grab a little bag and add it to whatever im making.
With regards to the roast - i didnt say we had a roast each week - i said we try and have a roast each week but if its not there then its simply not there and we make do. we will have a homemade pie instead thats used up some of the leftover chicken or pork and have that with potatoes and veg that i find lurkign in the freezer.
Hope that clears some stuff upTime to find me again0 -
I am envious of you. I know that you don't really have a choice but when I worked in a supermarket supposedly to save money I ended up buying more by being tempted; all of those nice foods! So the 10p bargains just about balanced it out. Anyway I have recently come across this website
http://www.lovefoodhatewaste.com/recipes
that I wish I had known about when I was working at the supermarket; some of the recipes are very sensible in using up food that would otherwise go to waste, sometimes specifically calling for overripe things! Hope someone else finds it useful0 -

So do you think these cheapies go some way to help you keep within the £100 per month then???

I think most people would use sprouting potatoes, wouldn't they? I know I doThe only time I don't use veggies are if they're really soft...
The chopped onion in the freezer is a good ideaso I guess it freezes ok then?
Do you have a chest freezer to store all of your batch cooked meals?
Do you put broccoli in a casserole or something then?
With regards to the roast - i didnt say we had a roast each week - i said we try and have a roast each week but if its not there then its simply not there and we make do. we will have a homemade pie instead thats used up some of the leftover chicken or pork and have that with potatoes and veg that i find lurkign in the freezer.
I hope I didn't offend you I just read it wrong about the roast
Hope that clears some stuff up:whistle:

I expect that Sammy K probably reallocates the ££ saved with her cheapies. She sticks within her budget even without the bargains I would imagine. Do you Sammy? Also she will be able to save something for a rainy day, when there is an unforeseen expense.
I think we all take advantage of cheapy stuff and regard it as a bonus, or something to be saved for a rainy day. My cheapy mushrooms and apples at the weekend meant I was able to feed guests yesterday at much less than I otherwise would. Mushroom soup meant I didn't need to get another pack of chicken pieces!"Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"
