The problem is that with the momentum the way it is, if you carry on saying "Martin says this" or "it's Martin's site" there is a real danger in the future that it ends up looking like a personality cult, and the MSE Admin team just the senior cult members "enforcing" their views on others.

How incredibly rude?! If you don't like the forums and the way they work then don't visit them.
I for one am grateful to Martin and the team for bringing all this information to light, and I certainly wouldn't mouth off at Admin.

As I said recently elsewhere, it's a slightly depressing development that some people want to tell others where and when they can post. It's a shame some want to gag differing opinions.
  • However, i can only advise that if you are that unhappy with the way this site and forum is run, there may be others better suited to your stance?

I'm very happy with this PUBLIC site thanks, as long as varying opinions are respected and it doesn't become a spamming exercise for one person's lucrative career.

Oh, and as long as it doesn't become that "cult" I feared, where any possible non-believers in the Messiah are forced out. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I agree and the word balance comes to mind.
I really find it difficult to understand how some people can be so rude to members of Martin's team be it from MSE or IPTW, sometimes it makes me ashamed to read MSE.

I hope I was not being rude and if it came across as that then I apologise.

I did find it rude to have my signatures deleted and no way to speak to the person who did it, and they never even tried to speak to me and explain what the problem was.

So if I now come across a bit hard I hope you understand why.

i completely agree with you on this - nothing wrong with having differing opinions but no excuse for being rude imo

I have tried to join freecycle leeds twice and both times my request has been ignored by the "moderator", or whatever the person in charge of that group is called. Sounded good when I first heard of it, but as I have never been able to access it, I will never know.
  • may i just ask what has any of these comments got to do with the original post??
    nothing
however i like to consider myself a freecycle expert being a moderator i get asked all the time to keep an eye out for certain items by people who are in desperate need of certain item's ,i.e. when unfortunately the county i live in was drastically flooded in summer 2007 (gloucestershire) i was asked by not only freecycle members but also fire and rescue service personel to look out for looted items taken from unfortunate members homes , clothing ,bedding and various other item's and not to put them up on site so the fire service could take these item's to help with the emergency shelter's that had to be set up and i must say i think i did rather well .i have also helped out my sister in law refurnish her home using freecycled items as she lost everything in her downstairs area through 6ft of flood water and i must say that most of what i have in my home has been recieved through freecycle and if me or my wife decide to get rid of anything we have freecycle is always our first port of call

i even promote freecycle on my car and our group now has over 3300 members and in the last few weeks we have started to see around 100 new members a week

i love freecyle and i do believe we all can make the difference by preventing usable good's from ending up in landfill and destroying the face of our planet that little bit more

Not everyone likes Freecycle and some think the people running it do it for thier own interests.

But I won't go into that to much, but there are rival sites out there doing the same type of thing.

Yay, I've just managed to sort MSE ItPaysToWatch' colour so they're green like the rest of the team. I wouldn't normally blow my own trumpet but I'm rather technically-challenged so I'm quite chuffed I worked out why it wasn't working and managed to sort it :j
well its better than blowing someone elses, well done :T

if people out there are freecycle moderators and are using the site for there own personal gain it is actually against freecycle's code of conduct
i run freecycle for the love of it .i am a full time carer looking after my wife who is ill i always post items on to the group before enquiring about them and i always make it clear i'm a moderator i have my pc on from 12pm through till 2 am mainly for freecycle moderation purposes but when there is nothing for me to do i browse the www and i'm a regular poster on several forums .i would be interested to hear of any moderator on any freecycle site's that use them in the manner you describe and i WILL REPORT THEM TO THE POWER'S THAT BE .
freecycle is a registered charity and as such should be run in a charitable manner NOT FOR PERSONAL GAIN
