Only dimwits and Victoria Beckham put things of value in hold baggage ! If somebody wants to pinch clothing from my case, I'll get new (er) stuff from the insurance.0

Saw this in the US at Atlanta airport last summer. A lady was complaining that her expensive suitcase had been damamged in transit. The extremely brusque airline rep kept simply repeating that the traveller should have had it wrapped if she didn't want it damaged. I guess if the locks failed, or the case got droppeed, it might stop things falling out but ,as has been said, these are commercial outfits trying to make a buck or three. I suppose you could do it youself at home ot just put on some locking straps if you are worried about the case being/opened/coming open
in transit.Just because somebody is certain doesn't mean they are right!0 -
if security (either here, or at your destination) want to check whats in the case it will just get ripped/cut off anyway0

I guess it also depends how much it costs, our friends mentioned they were going to get it done at Sydney airport and it works out at about £4 each I think for that price I would go for it the peace of mind that your bag won't get tampered with is worth it. I suppose it also protects it from damage a bit more.LBM-29/08/07

Yup, they'll cut it off and stick a label on it to say it was security checked. When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.0 -
I do think it's hilarious how much some people care about their luggage! Me, I've always used my nice, practical travel sack (with padlocks) and as far as I'm concerned it's for holding stuff in, end of. It protects your stuff.
But I travelled with a friend last summer who had bought a (bulky) brand new designer leopard-print suitcase to take with her. She had also bought a canvas "protector" to wrap the thing in during transit.
At the other end, she almost cried when her protector had been scraped!
I can see that this clingfilm has some security merits, but I wonder how many people are worried about their suitcases getting bruised as well...Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0 -
Hi Badger lady, i understand what you are saying about worrying about the state of your luggage, i suppose you have to accept it will get knocked about.
HOWEVER! i got off a flight in leeds today and found that my new hard shell case had been scraped all over it and had obviously had an edge of another case resting on it at one point as it was dented in and now looks a very thin weak point on the case. Yes i do accept that the case will get worn etc, but when it's only the second flight it has been on it is a bit disheartening.
Have filled in a claim form at the airport so will see what response i get.I LOVED HER SO MUCH I NOW LIVE ON MY OWN0 -
If you want to see whether your bag has been tampered with, and you have zips, then simply use two different coloured cable ties to secure the zips. Security can cut them if they want to, as can baggage handlers, but because you have used coloured cable ties it will be difficult to replace them and hide the evidence that the bags have been tampered with. I do this all the time.
My gut feeling is that wrapping is like a red rag to a bull for security folks. If I was one I'd deliberately target those bags and cut the wrapping. But I'm twisted...0
