Clingfilm suitcases?

I noticed quite a few people at various airports in the last couple of years have had their suitcases wrapped tight - (very tight almost shrinkwrapped!) in a sort of clingfilm which I suppose is an extra security measure.
Is there a machine or service at Gatwick airport that does this? It looks like its done by a machine as looks very perfect but I could be wrong.
Any info I would appreciate it, going from Gatwick North terminal this week

There was a machine in Edinburgh the other day...I'm sure there will be one.You may walk and you may run
You leave your footprints all around the sun
And every time the storm and the soul wars come
You just keep on walking0 -
I've wondered what happens if they need to look in your case once it's been clingfilmed. Do they re-clingfilm it afterwards?:smileyhea "here, hare, here" :smileyhea0

It prevents theft from bags. Why spend 10 minutes cutting your way through clingfilm to get into a bag when it would take 10secs for a non clingfilmed bag? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

No. These wrapping services are often after the initial "on entry" baggage scan but before airport security. They're private enterprises on a franchise and if security want to cut the wrapping off and look inside, they will.
It would be helpful if they had signs saying that these were independent businesses and not associated with airport security...but then people might think twice about using them.
Not sure what it's like in London, but the guys working in Delhi even choose uniforms very similar to the security staff so you assume they're part of the system.0 -
Thanks, I have emailed Gatwick to see if they have that service there but not expecting a quick reply.
Its just some Candians I know swear by it and some of our luggage is in need of replacing but need to save for some new decent stuff so thought maybe gatwick had the service!
Any gatwick North workers around know if its there?Aim to win in 2013 - a holiday somewhere nice, New York break, treats for family & friends & some cash would be lovely!!!0
