whatabout a birdfeeder that you can stick onto the window - this sort of thing http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tobar-03157-Window-Bird-Feeder/dp/B000FMHBTG and a supply of food

Does he have an mp3 or cd player - if so, perhaps a talking book to go with it?

Does he have a particular plant he likes? you can get dvds about specific gardens or different types of flowers, not necessarily showing you how to garden.

What about a memory book, wendywitch?

Put photos in it, and quotes that he used before his epileptic seizure, photographs could easily be lamitated and kept by his chair or favourite place!! Your mum could then ask him (to help his short term momory) who had visited that day, or small reminders of what to do....Ie get him a marker, and make a list of what to do today things and he has to mark them off one by one as he does the things, then atthe end of the day it has to be wiped clean...a baby wipe!! And it starts all over again the next day!! It will help his hand eye co-ordination and maybe in time add to it or take away from it!!

Easily homemade and it may help you and your mum!!!:)

I really hope that this helps!!!

    Good Luck!

    Hi,

I just found this thread, but I like it already.

We already have some presents for the children, but I do struggle in what to buy a 6y old girl and my 4y old nephew. Their parents are peticular about what they want and only tell us last minute, which I refuse, as it gets so expensive.
I am not very good with sewing etc.....

But I will try and read more of this thread when I get a bit more time.

I need some help with ideas for what to get my dad.

Two Christmas's ago he had an epileptic seizure when left him with limited speech, terrible short term memory, he can't read or write now and has a limited attention span and can't be left on his own for long. It's like having a full grown toddler.
He obviously does not work now due to all of this.
He use to be really into reading, cooking and gardening but can't do any of that unaided now.

Does anyone have any ideas?
How is his concentration? I'm wondering about a cd player and a few 'talking books'? If he's able to enjoy those, he could start borrowing more from the library.
  • I have been working on Xmas all year!!!

I have been selling stuff on ebay, just old kids clothes etc, and using the funds in my paypal to purchase bits and pieces on ebay!

Its worth noting that you can use paypal to pay for things on lots of online stores, M&S BHS etc and get 3% cash back as well!!

Can only make things easier for the big day :o

He does have a cd player but he hasn't used it since he's been ill. I'll speak to my mum see what she thinks.
He does have a book very similar to that that he was given by speak therapy. He has to add bits to it every week.

It is difficult, we used to have this problem with my sil. At this age all children seem to like crayons and colouring books. I hesitated to send cash as the parents then have control (sense a little conflict here?)

A pack of the kinds of things children love to do - comics, crayons. colouring books, ladybird books - anything you can pick up cheaply or add to the weekly shop are loved by children.

    I agree with moanymoany.
I'm making up stockings for my best mates daughters (13,12,9 & 7) with silly bits I've found as I go (things I'd like :o) . I'm spending the same amount as I would have for a large present (though I am over MY budget - I like buying things! :p) but it always looks like they've got loads!!

Just found this thread and it has made me realise Christmas is not too far off. I am really cutting back this year and trying to get more organised as my first grandchild is due on the 18th of December. Organisiation and keeping a tight reign on the money is going to be needed, as my daughter will be staying with us for a few weeks when the baby is born. I am also putting money away to help with her mortgage as her partner has left, so she will be on her own so have started a list and will begin buying things in the various sales. I have already told everyone that this year I will be cutting well back - normally about 30 presents - many this year will be a nice bottle of wine. I will start the xmas cakes in October, and invest in airtight boxes for other baking as no doubt we will have many visitors. I am on the hunt for lovely baskets as there is a jam factory nearby which sells fancy pots of jam and small packs of bisuits and sweets and for about £5 you can make lovely hampers, Getting more excited now!!! will chck out all the sales just shortly - and use quidco too!!!
    Every days a School day!
