  • Hi everyone this is my first post!
    Right, I sent my letter to HSBC asking for my last 6 years worth of statements about a week ago. Got a letter back today stating that they assumeI want the information to reclaim bank charges, all claims on hold, test case blah blah blah. They didnt send me my statements but very kindly put a total of my unauthorised overdraft fees on a separate sheet (how nice of them!) to save me the trouble of trawling through my statements. HOWEVER, only the overdraft fees were listed, nothing else such as rejected direct debits charges etc.

    The letter did however state that in order to protect my identity that they had destroyed the cheque i sent as they do not charge for this info (yes they do?!?).

    The letter did end by stating that if I wanted to I could view my statements online (account is shut) or I could request paper copy statements...............but isnt that what i asked for in the first place? :confused:

    Silly bankers!:D

    Oh well, another letter in post tomorrow then!

    Has anyone else experienced this? I think its either to delay or to fob me off with less charges than I actually have.

    Hi all! I owe £2000 on my hsbc card and have now set up £100 direct debit per month to get it settled as quickly as possible. The account is already closed im just settling the balance with them. If i were to claim my charges could they default me on my account and demand i pay the whole amount back immediatley? I know it sounds silly but i want to be prepared for every possible outcome and as the account is already closed, this would be the worst!

  • Hi im new to the forum and submitted my claim to HSBC months ago,although im aware they entered court proceedings can anybody update me as to when these will be finished or any inevitable outcome? i want my £1k back :)

    I am a long-time user of this site, but a newbie to the forums. I've been incensed to contribute to the discussion on bank charges having recently exceeded my agreed overdraft limit of £2,750 by 39p.

    As if this wasn't absurd enough, it's not even my fault. On the 25th March I bought a DAB radio from Amazon, who debited the amount on the day they dispatched it to me. Three days later, they refunded the money they had taken, at this point I checked my account at a cash machine (as I often do - I'm quite responsible with money generally) and having just received the refund, my account appeared to have more money in it than it should have done.

    The following day Amazon took the full amount out again, and I carried on spending as if they hadn't (I had no idea they had refunded the money at the time I checked my balance). I paid for an item on my debit card in Tesco, and this took me 39p over my agreed limit.

    A few days later I received a letter from the Halifax saying that they were going to charge me £20 because they had to pay 39p to cover the cost of my fatal debit card transaction, and a £28 'monthly Unauthorised Overdraft Charge' because, well, why charge once, when you are arrogant enough to think you can get away with charging twice?(!)

    Naturally that wasn't the end of it, and the very next day (1st April!) they sent me a letter saying that because It was now April and I was still over my limit, they were going to charge me another £28 'unauthorised Overdraft Charge'. In total I was only in excess of my limit by 39p for 7 days, until my student loan cleared, and they seemed to think that a £76 charge reflected the costs they had to bear as a result.

    I called into a branch today, and explained Amazon's misdemeanour, but the Halifax said that because Amazon admitted that it was the fault of their payment processor in the email they sent to me explaining the whole situation, I should write to them and demand that they cover the costs incurred. After some debate, I managed to get the Halifax to reverse the latter £28 charge as a 'goodwill gesture', but they have yet to budge on the rest.

    I am now writing to Amazon, and wait with baited breath. Does anybody else have an opinion on this? Should I just go back to Halifax and demand they refund the whole lot or remind them of the questionable legality of disproportionate bank charges, or do I wait for Amazon's response first?

    Sorry to hear this, Ian. Utterly ridiculous.

    First off, I would be voting with my feet and changing banks if they're not going to sort it.

    Secondly, I would be complaining very loudly in the bank. Stating the facts calmly but for all to hear. "I WENT 39P OVER MY OVERDRAFT LIMIT FOR SEVEN DAYS AND YOU FEEL IT IS FITTING TO CHARGE ME £76... WHY?!" They'll no doubt want you to go in a quiet room to 'discuss' the matter. I would stand firm, still being reasonable, and say that you don't want to go into a room, you just want it resolved "NOW". I'm sure the banks can't like these kinds of things being aired publicly and it looks very unreasonable of them in front of their customers if you are able to keep your cool at the same time.

    Hi. I am also a student, however I am with HSBC with an overdraft of £1500. Hopefully it doesnt seem patronising but how are you £2750 in the red in your current account in any case? :eek: Are you paying for your tuition fees yourself or something?

    I completely agree the charge they have levied on you (even after the 'goodwill gesture') is crazy, however I do in some minute part agree with the banks. If they cant charge people money to cover things like this people will never learn, as money talks, when someone takes more off you than they should people may try to think about it more.

    Again, OP I'm not having a go at you, just airing my view :beer:

    hi, hope someone can help me. i had a credit card in 2003 ish... which i got into debt with, got charges Etc. they Closed the Account and sent it to Debt management. Now i know about 30% off the card balance were Charges. I want to know if i am able to reclaim those now? i am paying the Debt management company but i Feel that if i got back some of the Charges then the balance Could or Should be Settled.

    hope someone can give me advise on this. i have a Template letter to send to them asking for my Statements etc But i dont have a cheque book either. would a Postal order be allowed?

  • Hello, everyone - new here, very pleased to have found this place.

    I've started the process of trying to reclaim charges from HSBC and today they responded to my request for a list of charges over the last 6 years. It was suprisingly short. I decided to leave HSBC when the penalty for exceeding my overdraft jumped from the odd £30 to £125. And HSBC acknowledges having taken a whopping £500 off me in such fees in the last six months. However, that is almost ALL it admits to. It claims it has only charged me £60 in "other related charges" between December 2003 and September 2007 (and presumably nothing before that, despite the request for details for the last six years).

    Now, I may dispute the bank's method of dealing with it, but I am quite sure I've exceeded my overdraft limit, and been charged for it, more than twice during those years. I resented the vanishing £30 charges even before they leapt so dramatically and I'm bewildered that they're not on the list. In fact, that £60 isn't even under overdraft fees - which means there's nothing explicitly listed as such before 2007!

    Are they trying to cover up the real amount? What should I do?

    Ask for your statements rather than a list of charges.
  • Thanks, I suppose that's obvious. I guess I'm just worried that having decided this is all they've charged me, they'll stick to it and I wondered if anything like this had happened to anyone else.
