Perhaps they've fixed the fault - it certainly just worked for me (I've received the confirmation e-mail).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Well - it seems to work for me, though I haven't gone beyond 'Step 2' which is where you would confirm the order.

The mailer I got from BT also mentioned 0800 121 8073 as the number to ring if one wanted to sign up by telephone.

It would never go to the confirm stage for me, error message "Sorry, we don’t recognise your details"

Tried on the 1,2,3 & 4 Feb, then gave up and emailed them

My new 3 Monthly BT bill is due on the 25 Feb, so we should see if there is a Option charge problem or not !

I am really interested to find out how Sunhil gets on with his test.

Well, I have made my inclusive weekend calls on my 'spare' line and will see what I get charged this time next week for 1571 etc..

In the meantime, I have now finally opted for paper free billing for both my lines and reprogrammed my Orchid dialler (on the main line) to send my weekend landline calls over BT.

I haven't yet decided whether to opt for the 12 month BT option 2 offer but I may well - as we don't really make calls over 60 minutes long (not many people do) and will probably decide whether or not to do so by the end of March.

Also, I am feeling a bit 'sorry' for both Primus and BT:

    - Primus are losing lots of money (and not just in the UK), so I do sometimes wonder how long they can keep the Saver 2 tariff going with all of us loss making customers. Having said that I should probably sign up for their mobile option just in case I ever make a long call from a landline..

    - BT because I read the KPIs they released with their latest results. Page 6 (or 11/14 in Adobe Reader) shows just how quickly the volumes of geographic calls are falling so it seems like they could do with more calls on their network (especially as they are free!<g>). The good news is that non geographic calls are falling even faster :)

    Hi

Interesting re Primus. Do you reckon then that they will soon scrap their free eve calls (no big deal cos we can use free BT calls) but what is your info on Primus Mobile Penny opt. That is a good deal , are they making money on that , or is that in danger too?

Interesting, Maybe they should try harder to keep good paying customers and not upset them.

I have no inside information about Primus cancelling anything but was just looking at the Primus website the other day and wondering..

Its a large global company but one which is making a big loss (will have to see what their annual results say later this week).

As such, I was just wondering what their strategy was in the UK consumer market..

I can understand their basic business model of offering evening/weekend calls for free and making their money on daytime and international calls. However, with many of their customers using the likes of 18185/1899 for such calls they won't be making the money expected.

If it wasn't for forums like this and customer recommendations, I don't see how they would gain any customers, as their publicity (apart from appearing on uswitch) seems minimal. They haven't advertised much and their brand isn't well known in the UK as a supplier..

From personal experience, there have also been very few attempts to 'convert' its customer base by offering them broadband/line rental - i.e. to become more profitable for them.

The free calls and (especially the capped mobile calls if the calls last for more than a few minutes) will all cost them money - in interconnect charges etc - though looking at their prices, I have noticed one or two changes which i haven't seen before (though they might have been there) and don't rememeber them notifing me of - namely:

    - they now bill per minute not per second like BT, 18866 etc
    - Customers preferring to receive a paper bill are charged an additional £1.50 (exc. VAT) per month.
    - Customers preferring to pay for the service by means other than Direct Debit will be charged an additional £1.50 (exc. VAT) per month.

so it does sound as if they are trying to make up some revenue from somewhere..

Out of interest, as I have been meaning to ask - how does their Mobile Penny option work? Is it 20p/call 24/7 or is it 'normal rates' to 20p/call and then capped? If the first, i can see how they might make some money from very short mobile calls..

    Regards

I use it in conjunction with BT's £1.75/month Call Dversion Calling Feature - and it is, exactly as described, 20p for up to 20 minutes. (i.e. if I answer a call diverted to my mobile and terminate the call before 20 minutes has elapsed, a charge of 17p (excl. VAT) appears on my bill).

So, they'll make money if the call is very short but lose if it is longer (I assume the cut-off is somewhere around 10 minutes).

Primus Penny Mobile is 20p total cost for anything up to 20 Mins 24/7.

If you spend more than 20 mins on a call then it is approx 6/9/13 p per min inc VAT weekend/eve/day. Except to Three 9/16/22 pence per min. This is Penny Mobile rates Aug 07.

But looking at Saver Opt 2 rates to mobiles (see gt94sss2 link above) the rates are slightly higher.
