I currently rent my phone line from BT but pay for my calls with TalkTalk (and before you ask, Broadband is with Tiscalli and we are going to get an inclusive package when we can decide who are the lesser of the evils).

To the point...

I have just recieved a letter from BT telling me that I now get free weekend calls and that I can sign up to Free Evening calls too at no extra cost by regisitering for 12 months. So far, so good. However, the sneaky bit is at the bottom of the page where it tells you of your personal web page at www.freeevenings.bt.com/yourname
Now my first thought was - they haven't sent me a password, what is on this page and how secure is it. I entered the address and it asks for your phone number and to confirm you are the account holder - it looks just like any other front page login.
If you actually read the page correctly, by entering those numbers, you have signed yourself up for 12 months!

It looks as though there could be a confirm page next but I am not about to go in and find out as I don't want to risk it.

There may be further security checks but I reckon that it would be easy to work out someone elses web page. I've picked 2 friends and typed there name in to the web address and up pops the page!!!!! I selected another name who I know isn't a registered bt user and it says sorry page not known. eg: www.freeevenings.bt.com/asmith
I don't know who asmith is or their phone number but it illustrates the point.
(apologies if you are asmith).

PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO SIGN UP ACCIDENTLY

edit: noticed in the small print that this is a 12 month renewable contract which is automatically renewed for another 12 months unless you tell them otherwise. They do say they will write to remind you though.

bt have sent a con through the door they are uping the monthly charge by 75p but dropping your bill by £1.25 per month if you pay by dd they say the new monthly line rental will be £11.75 but then make it sound like you only get the £1.25 if you sign up for there bt option 2 reading between the lines this in not the case and the reduction applies to everyone

who gets there bill via the online method the conning b*** also £10.50 + 75p = £11.25 not £11.75 so the reduction only mean you will be paying the same price as you pay now ARRRRRRRRR
    :
they are simply conning people into taking option 2 the other thing is if you ring up to enquire and press the take the option 2 button the phone line automatically processes it and applies the change straight away instead of putting you through to a human to do it!!

You could get a better version of the free evening and weekend UK 01/02/03 calls (90 minute limit per call instead of BT's 60 minutes and no 12 month contract) if you just change your CPS calls provider from Talk Talk to Primus Saver Option 2.

Go a stage further and also opt for Penny Mobile 2 and you can also get calls to mobiles of up to 20 minutes capped at 20p.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

That was my point, they are tricking you into signing up on-line or, so it seems, over the phone too!

I just wanted to warn people to keep their wits about them!

    Thanks.

We are going to change either phone or BB but Tiscali are c**p and we've had loads of problems. People seem to have problems with TalkTalk too - are they all as bad as each other - maybe better the devil you know.....

  • I too got this junk mail from BT this morning.

This is not the first time they have sent letters with personal web addresses on as they are always sending me junk trying to get me to move to option 2 or 3 with a new contract via a personal link.

And if BT are so bothered about cutting down on paper and saving the planet they should stop sending me junk mail every month or so.
  • I was wondering why the voucher said free evening calls if you sign up to option 2, and the leaflet says option 2 will be reduced from £3.45 to £2.70. I have just been on the phone (good thing it was a toll free number) to a young man who couldn't explain it. He asked me to hold on longer while he researched it. I said I would stick with what I have.

It all sounds too dodgy. I think the free evenings + weekends on option 2 is only till 1 April, then they start charging you £2.70. My internet provider tried that - said it was free, yet I kept getting charged each month. Luckily it was not on contract so I was able to cancel it.

Since option 1 customers are getting free weekend calls, I will just make all my calls on the weekend ;) .

The BT FREE Evening and Weekend Call Offer is an ongoing one but requires you to sign up to a Rolling 12 Month Contract.

BT seem to be going out of their way to make the many changes difficult to understand - seems like they are trying to get rid of customers.
