I signed up on-line, then found a billing error of £99 and want ot resolve this before being committed for 1 year with BT. How does one cancel? Do I have to wait for something by snail-mail then cancel? When I phoned there was no trace of my order for Free Evenings on their system (yet).0

Do you?
That is the point we don't know how it is going to work and you may be traped.
Now you are being a bit more reasonable. You may be trapped, is a much better, and less inflammatory, way to put it.
No, I don't know exactly what sort of notice period there will be at the end of each 12 month period; but I am trying to find out. I have a funny feeling it will be a bit more than 24 hours.
I will post any update here. Just waiting for my official confirmation to come through and if the answer is not there I will try phoning................again.
Here is the bit from their T&C web page. No mention of exactly what the notice period will be but it looks like you can simply tell them, at any point, that you don't want to renew, or you want to downgrade to Option 1, at the end of the contract. It would then be up to you to make alternative arrangements, for when the contractual period had ended. No one will be trapped!
"Renewable contract : Contract subject to a 12 month minimum renewable period, i.e. at the end of each 12 month minimum period the contract will be automatically renewed for a further 12 month minimum period unless you tell us otherwise. We will write to remind you when your contract is nearing the end of a renewable period. You cannot downgrade during the minimum period or any subsequent renewable minimum period. If you cease service during the minimum period or any subsequent renewable period a termination charge will apply. This charge will be based on the outstanding period of your contract term.
If you do not wish to renew, all you need to do is let us know before the renewal date. If you choose not to renew your contract with us at that time, you will then start to pay the usual monthly price for your calling plan."No reliance should be placed on the above.0 -
Suppose you have one of these free evenings agreements with BT then move house or move abroad before the year is up - what happens?0

"If you move home and retain an account with BT you will take the remainder of any minimum period with you."

If you are planning to move abroad, or teminate the contract for any other reason, this is probably not the best idea, unless you are going to do it near the end of the contract to minimise any outstanding monthly charges that would be applicable. You gain more flexibility with Primus CPS on BT Option 1, Free Weekends (If appropriate, remember to make inclusive weekend landline calls via 1280 to qualify for free Caller Display via BT Privacy). No reliance should be placed on the above.0 -

Don't think so, just 01, 02 and 03 numbers0 -
I've also had notification of their new charges and have been researching into changing providers. Am I right in thinking that the Post Office offer free evening and weekend calls plus line rental for only £9.95 per month? This is even cheaper than the current BT charges.0

Welcome to the MSE forums puppypal.
Don't risk handing over your line rental for the sake of 55p!
Please see the 'HERE' link in my signature below for better ways to save on voice telephony.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
It will be more than that from 1st April - £15.60 per year. Do you still think that it's not worth the risk?0

BT's Unlimited Weekend Plan (really just the new name for BT Together Option 1) will cost £10.50 per month then, as it does now (£11.75 minus £1.25 paper-free billing discount if you pay by DD).
With regard to your other point, the main reasons are explained in the note beneath point [1] of that link I pointed you to.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0
