I can't - not on online billing yet! (we have had some problems with our daughter over using the phone so my OH insists on itemised billing until she is under control!)

You can sign up to what BT call Online/Paper billing.

With this, you can access your account online but still get paper bills (so no discount for paper free billing)

Its what I have as I decided that £1.50/quarter discount for online billing wasn't worth it for me.. I plan to change in April to online billing only as the discount is increasing to £3.75/quarter a line - which will also more than cancel out the line rental increase for me..

I actually think 'rolling contract' is a very bad phrasse to describe it.

I would prefer something like ' 12 month contract which will be automatically renewed every year etc unless you inform us otherwise'

BT do in fact call it a Renewable Contract.

Call it what you like, i still dont like these type of contracts.:D

I agree that they are not ideal for everyone. This option is more suited to the less committed money saver. If you don't fancy it, then simply ignore it.

There really isn't a problem as long as you know what you are signing up for and are sure that you can comply with the terms and conditions. I have been bending my spreadsheet again and find it difficult to beat BT option 2 (12 month contract) and 18185 for the kind of use our home phone gets. It also makes things easier for my family to be able to make a cheap call. I think I am going to give it a go for a year and see how we get on. If there are any problems I will let you know. It will be a relief to get away from TalkTalk and the hassle of chasing them up when they perform their latest c*ck-up and try to blame/charge me.

This forum has been an excellent place to bounce this idea around until I made my mind up. My family are no help as they are not bothered.

Thanks to everyone for their comments and a special thanks to Heinz for being tolerant of the idea.

I am really interested to find out how Sunhil gets on with his test.

Surely, by definition, anyone using a CPS calls provider will be a BT Option customer because you can't have a CPS provider without a BT line.

Heinz, I've had a sleep on this one and think you are probably correct.

I think the following statement by the BT person would still be perfectly valid in these circumstances:

"Because the calls were made via BT (even though they were FREE) the fact that they were made in BT network means no charge for caller display"

If you are a CPS/Option 1 punter, and are seen to be routing ANY calls via the BT network using 1280 (including "FREE" Option 1 calls made on Saturday and Sunday) you should, theoretically, qualify for the free Caller Display via BT Privacy.

This means that you will probably be able to save your 10p on curry Fridays. Order another Poppadom, every now and again, to treat yourself.

    Hi

I have free CLI with BT , but I didn't sign up specifically for BT Privacy . Are they different or will I need to sign up for BT Privacy to continue to get free CLI . I am planning on staying with BT Opt 1 , and just use the free calls Sat to qualify for CLI ,my CPS being Primus.

    Hi Alan,

As you are not paying for the service at the moment, I would think your CLI (Caller Display) would still be free, as long as you make the qualifying weekend landline calls using the 1280 prefix.

Something must be currently qualifying you for the CLI service. Are you sure it's not bundled in with another service that you are paying for?

It would probably do no harm signing up with BT Privacy as that would be a belts and braces approach. You would also get the benefit of the automatic TPS (Telephone Preference Service) registration. More info at: http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/tps/ .
No reliance should be placed on the above.
  • Has anyone signed up for the BT 12 month contract Option 2 deal? I signed up, but now when I go to the Calling Plan section on their website, it says I'm on Option 2 and have to pay £13.95 a month. Anyone else had this?

    Yes same for me.

Contacted them by Email and asked to be put on "the free UK Evening & Weekend calls when you sign up to a 12 month renewable contract on our Evening & Weekend Plan"

Received email confirmation that I have been put on "the free UK Evening & Weekend plan" with a 12 month renewable contract, but as you say the online account shows Option 2 @ £13.95

I also asked why there was no online call plan option for the free evenings and weekends with rolling contract, BT failed to answer this question.

On behalf of my Mother, I've asked that too:
I see it is possible to change BT Together options online by 'ticking a box'.

However, there doesn't appear to be a box for changing to the new BT Together Option 2 but having the £3.45 (to be £2.70) monthly fee waived by agreeing to a 'rolling 12 month contract'.

The nearest I can find is:
    _____________________________

Enjoy inclusive UK Evening and Weekend calls for just £3.45 a month plus line rental.

Inclusive calls to UK* landlines between 6pm and 6am weekdays and all day at the weekends. Available to eligible residential customers on BT Together Option 2 (the 'Unlimited Evening & Weekend Plan' from 1 April 2008) with no minimum term. £3.45 a month (£2.70 from 1 April 2008) plus line £10.50 a month line rental if you pay by Direct Debit and elect for paper-free billing.
    _____________________________

As you will see, that's changing to the chargeable version.

Is the absence of such an option an oversight or is it an option to be added from 1 April 2008?

I haven't decided yet but, having been loyal to BT for over 50 years now, I don't expect to be changing anytime soon - so it'd be nice to be able to tick a box if/when I do make up my mind.

    Please advise
The unhelpful reply I received was:
Thank you for your e-mail dated 9/2/08 regarding BT Options.

I have checked the account details for you and can confirm that you are on BT option1. Please do reply with your consent to change the option. I can go ahead and make the changes on your account.

Should you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us again via e-mail.

    Thank you for contacting BT.

Needless to say, I replied to that:
    Dear Naveen Kumar

You appear to have ignored my question.

Perhaps it is one you should forward to your web site people rather than attempting to answer yourself?

My question is: (I then repeated the text from my first enquiry)
BT's reply to that was as follows:
Thank you for your e-mail dated 11/2/08 regarding changing the calling plan online.

My apologies for any inconvenience you may have been caused.

In response to your e-mail, I have checked your account and would like to inform you that your account is now registered fro BT Together Option1 wherein the monthly line rental that you pay is £11.00 incl vat on a monthly basis and £33.00 incl vat on a quarterly basis.

Further, you can view and change the calling plan online you need to go to www.bt.com/youraccount and enter your login details. Once you are in to your account, click on " go " just beside " view bill ". Then you need to click on " calling plan " which will give the option to View or change your calling plan.

Futher, would like to inform you that from the 01/02/08 BT Together Option 2 which is now known as Unlimited Evening & Weekend Plan customers can also opt-in to the new free UK Evening & Weekend calls on BT Together Option 2 with a 12 month minimum renewable contract, saving £3.45 per month (£2.70 per month from 01 April).

At the end of each 12 month minimum period the contract will be automatically renew for a further 12 month minimum period unless the customer tells us otherwise. We will write to remind customers when their contract is nearing the end of a renewable period. Customers cannot downgrade during the minimum period or any subsequent renewable minimum period. Customers cancelling within a 12 month term are subject to standard Cancellation Charges.

Moreover, from the 01/04/08 the monthly package fee for the Unlimited Evening & Weekend Plan (BT Together Option 2) will reduce to £2.70 per month. Daytime calls will increase from 3.25ppm to 4ppm. Price of calls after the hour will therefore increase to 4ppm. Set up fee of 6p applies.

If you still face any problems to change the details online kindly forward us your consent and we will assist you with the same.

If you have any further queries please do not hesitate to contact us again via e-mail.

    Thank you for contacting BT.

That wasn't of much help either but, thankfully, people on this forum are more helpful and so I used THIS LINK (kindly posted by gt94sss2 below) to upgrade.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

For whatever reason, the 'free evenings and weekend' package is not listed if you login to your BT account and choose 'Change Calling Plan' - I presume BT will add it at some stage.

At the moment only the 1 month 'Option 2' and the 12 month "Option 2 with Call Mobile" are included

To change to that plan, it seems you either need to call them on 0800 121 8073, respond to their mailings or do so via the BT website here or here

That it appears as £13.95/month though is not totally a surprise - as the £3.45 is supposed to appear as a rebate on your bill...

    Regards
    Sunil
