I think it's a joke that professional cake decorators are saying that cheap cakes are wrong.

This is MSE. I can assure you there are many things that are 'cheap' about MSE weddings and what we ladies try and do is compromise.

Obviously, if our budgets were £30k we wouldn't be considering M&S cakes. But my budget is significantly less than that. So I'm making cupcakes for our guests. AND I'm not even going to have my picture taken cutting a cake. Did you just fall over in horror?

This forum isn't a Money Saving Cakes forum - we're saving money on weddings - everywhere we possibly can. I'm having an MSE car, DIY cake, MSE dress, Hire suit (not purchase!), MSE venue, MSE flowers etc etc.

Don't try and tell me that the one place I MUST spend more money is the cake!!!!! Because actually, I'd rather spend £300 and have bridesmaids. Grr.

Go off to a different wedding forum where people have loads of money and convince them to spend loads on your wonderful cakes. And do us all a favour, why don't you tell us who you are so that we can avoid you in the future?
    I love surprises!

    Well said Maggie.

I can't understand why 3 new people in the space of 12ish hours would all flock to this almost 3 year old thread though.

I don't even know how much our cake cost as it was made by a friend as our gift and it was a suprise so I had no idea of what it looked like till we saw it on the day. It was a 4 tier black and white cake which everyone commented on, seeing as friend had never made a cake before!

We were chuffed to bits with it and it tasted gorgeous, which is all that matters.

It is pretty odd! 3 new people post on a 3 year old thread! I'm chuffed with mine - in spite of it's ready to roll icing! Shock, horror!

I would have loved to have been able to buy a supermarket cake but had to make my own because of allergies! I don't care how much it costs - it's my day and there was no way my cake was costing more than my dress! x

You're being careful and sensible though, if anyone were to knock that, then they're not even worth wasting breath or time on.

The funny thing is, we probably wouldn't have noticed on the day if there wasn't a cake there because we were so wrapped up in the whole excitement of the day and our guests.

If we wouldn't have had our cake made for us, we would have had the choccy 3 tier one from M&S and we wouldn't have give a fig what anyone else thought of that.

  • I wouldn't care! I don't eat it! I have made it because I felt I should! It was my way of being in control! I won't notice it! I can guarantee that - did panic the other day when it wasn't in my kitchen at 3 am - then remembered it was being iced! :D

The thing that made me laugh was the bit about it being photographed - I'll have a picture of us on the wall but not one of the cake! I would be sad if someone criticised it but it is mine! x

Yes, it will be the ONLY 'item' that will be photographed.

So no flowers will be photographed.

    No shoes.

    No rings.

    No perfume.

    No table setting.

    No single decorations.

    Just people.

    And the cake.

I paid a huge amount for a bespoke wedding cake...would I advise anyone else to do it....well you can if you want to..but in honesty if I had my day again an M&S creation would be wonderful....well anything would have been better than what I got!....yes I have a picture of us cutting it and every now and again when I get the album out I can still see the grimace on my face!

We ended up with so much left over because no one ate it and as for the tradition of saving the top tier for the christening well it was well passed using...and yes all you cake people...it was stored correctly!
frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!

    2017 toiletries challenge 179 out 145 in ...£18.64 spend

I've kept our top tier for the babies christening next year, wonder if it will last?

That's something I noticed actually when we first started looking at cakes, out of every cake maker/shop we looked at, only a tiny few offered samples to taste.

It's all very well having a big gorgeous looking cake, but what's the point if it tastes like crap?

Why take a gamble and pay a few hundred quid for a cake when you have no idea what it will taste like?

One thing I have noticed, is all the couples who had supermarket cakes said they tasted fab.

  • A bespoke cake is MUCH more expensive than a supermarket cake ~ again, can you make a cake to feed 80 people for less than £100?

Honestly? No. And why would anyone want to put a lot of time, money and effort into making something for someone who doesn't want to/can't afford to pay for it?

As a cake maker, I actually suggest M&S cake etc.. to people when I know they haven't got a lot to spend (and help them with ideas for decorating it). That doesn't mean I think thier cakes are the same as or as good as mine, or that I think their portion quotes are right, I don't. BUT I do understand that 'bespoke' cakes (and prices) are not for everyone.

Even so - you don't need to slag off the quality of a bespoke cake, or the costs/effort that goes into making them just because you either cannot afford one, or choose to spend your money elsewhere.

Beautiful dress, beautiful venue, wonderful photos, budget cake ..?

Budget dress, budget venue, budget photos, budget cake - why not!

If you cannot 'taste the difference' - then it may simply be that YOU cannot taste the difference. Some people can, and choose to pay for a really special cake on their wedding day, which is fine if they can afford to. Nothing wrong with that, is there?:)

Re costs- what would you expect to pay for a piece of cake in a cafe? Multiply that by your number of guests, then add something for the time and costs of decoration. The more elaborate the cake, the more it will cost (obviously). If it costs less, then that probably says something about the quality of the cake and the ingredients and time that went into making it.

    Your choice, of course.

The problem with my cake and the shop that made it was they made the cake they wanted and not what I wanted...having 2 receptions we asked for a 3 tier cake for the first reception and then an extra bottom tier to be used in place of the one we cut at the first reception,so we could have an uncut cake at our evening reception....cake shop made a 4 tier cake ....and we only discovered that when we had it delivered to our venue the day before the wedding...this creation stood over 4 feet tall and we looked like midgets up against it.... there was enough there to feed the 5000.
Even better when we actually cut the thing it was all fruit and they had failed to supply the extra "spare" sponge cake we ordered..

I have not slagged off the quality of a bespoke cake as the previous poster quotes...just told of my experience with said bespoke cake makers.
I do however concede that the cake market has changed dramatically since my wedding and given my time again I would not take the route of a bespoke again.
