Too often people spend a fortune on cake that doesn't get eaten! I would rather spend my money on something else'

But you could say that about the whole wedding industry - a dress and a pair of shoes you wear once, hired suits that go back to the shop (and it's hardly something your OH wears every day!), an album of photographs that no-one looks at after the first 6 months, flowers that die, and my own bugbear, £50 a head for what is essentially a Sunday lunch.

The only 'item' that's photographed is the cake - why scrimp on it?

I too make wedding cakes (hi Christine, nice to meet a kindred spirit :)) and cannot agree with the comments that all cakes are the same 'once it's all hacked up'. As for £100 budget for 80 guests, it's unrealistic. So you can tell exactly where a cake has come from and how much it cost when it's been cut up into portions for everyone??? And £100 budget for 80 guests is no unrealistic, that's why some couples go for the supermarker cakes!

I understand people are on a budget and this site is aimed at saving you money, but this one is a false economy. The number of beautiful wedding albums I see at wedding fairs, where the couple have obviously spent a lot of money on a photographer, and there they are, cutting a mass produced cake. So what? If that's the cake the couple wanted, then it has naff all to do with anyone else.

If you want to save time, money, and stress, go to a bespoke decorator. By the time you've collected your cake from the shop, driven to the venue and set it up (not as easy as M&S make out), the overall package is more expensive. And as Christine said, your cake is like everyone else's. Who cares?! Again, that's the choice of the couple!

It's meant to be your special day - have something special! Hahaha, with an attitude like yours, I'd rather have a supermarket cake! The special part of the special day is the ceremony, the cake isn't important at all. [/QUOTE]

    Honestly, what happened to CHOICE?

Some people don't care about a cake, so why would they pay over the odds for someone to make one when they can buy a cake off a shelf???

I'm going to report these posts as they are offering no advice at all.

And if I didn't know better I'd think the 2 new users that have popped up are the same person.

  • Mine has come in a lot less than that - I will wear my dress again - my OH will wear his suit again - I have not spent a fortune on photo's - my flowers are wooden! My meal was also half of your £50 example!

Just because one person wants expensive doesn't mean everyone does! My cake has cost me about £30 for a two tier cake - a 10in and a 12in. That includes boards, icing and everything else. I would much rather spend £100 on one from a supermarket than £500. And as you said - it's only for photo's no-one will look at in 6 months anyway!

I resent this remark - why would I set up two accounts? I came across this post and felt it was undermining my business. I have no need to 'be' two people.

I have offered advice - like for like, a bespoke cake is no more expensive overall than a supermarket one. Is healthy debate not welcome on this board?

And yes, I can tell the difference between a supermarket cake and an individually produced one.

  • like for like, a bespoke cake is no more expensive overall than a supermarket one.

 If thats true, can you PM me your price list as at the moment I am either considering £40 for a supermarket cake which I will add some decoration to or £40 to make cupcakes myself so if you can do a bespoke one for the same price for about 70 people I would love your details :D
  • As a fellow cake maker, I cannot agree more :T. I work very hard and put many hours into every wedding cake, using top qualtiy ingredients, a great deal of time, skill and experience from design and consultation through to making and decorating the cake itself plus delivery and set up.

'Cheap' wedding cakes from supermarkets are never made to the same kind of standard - they are 'mass produced' - with a minimal amount of time, effort and skill. That's not to say that they don't provide a good, low-budget alternative for some - but it really is an joke when M&S, for example, quote ridiculous portion sizes - such as: this three tier sponge cake will serve 144  - when in fact most cake makers would tell you a standard 6,8,10 (inches) sponge cake will serve about 75-80 portions.

And although M& S say that their cakes are 10.5" tall, the ones I have seen have been a lot smaller - meaning that the portions served must be tiny. A standard sponge cake serving should be 2" x 1" by the height of the cake - these will be more like 1" x 1" (standard fruit cake finger size). 5.45 kg total weight for a three tier cake is tiny!!!

Perhaps Waitrose and M&S should start selling wedding dresses as well .. now, that would be handy ;).

Personal choice, of course - but please don't confuse one of these 'quick, cheap and easy' cakes with the real thing - and make sure that you really do KNOW what you will be getting for your money in terms of quality, size and portion allowance.

A thread about supermarket cakes is undermining your business??

Oh purlease! If that's the case, you better get used to it because a lot of couples now are knuckling down with their wedding costs and opting for a supermarket cake!

A bespoke cake is MUCH more expensive than a supermarket cake ~ again, can you make a cake to feed 80 people for less than £100?

ETA : You do realise this thread is almost 3 years old don't you, so supermarket wedding cakes are nothing new.

  • My cousin had a bespoke cake - cost about £500 - it was gross! It really was hideous! She cut it during the day and sent her friend who was coming at night to M&S to buy a couple of slabs of their cake! It is all to do with personal preference! I made my own cake because I wanted to. If I had bought a cheap supermarket cake I would have done it because it was MY choice! It is a lot better to have a standard cake and get married than have an expensive cake and no wedding! It is the marriage part that is important as opposed to the fancy bits!
