There's one a few miles away! hooray!
What matters most is how well you walk through the fire
  • We had that 2nd one as our wedding cake because I don't like fruit cake. It was the best cake I've ever had, chocolate and orange, absolutely gorgeous. Think it was £165 for 3 tiers (but this was 4 years ago). We served it as the dessert at the evening buffet. I would really reccomend Waitrose.

The Waitrose and M&S cakes look lovely. We didn't go for them in the end as most of them contain almond paste, and one of my closest friends has a severe allergy.

We managed to find a local cake maker who costs the same, but will tailor to our design.

Hi I've been reading this thread with interest. I make and decorate wedding cakes and I really can't understand what you see in a M & S Cake. They are less that 2" deep, are not straight, on the flimsy boards and stacking appropriately is not as easy as you think. I have been asked to put these cakes right/stack on several occasion and have refused. You get what you pay for.

I cannot comment of the Waitrose cake. I agree it does look lovely, nice and deep and very responsibly priced. However, if the photograph is anything like what M & S market, then you will be in for a shock because the real thing may not be any thing like the photograph.

As for the boyfriend who thinks that the price is too much! I charge much more for a 3 tier wedding cake with similar handmade sugar flowers. This includes, my time, ingredients, gas, electricity, equipment, boards, boxes, sundries, petrol, delivery, etc etc. I'd like to know if he would work for less that the minimum wage. I put in hours and hours of work into making a bespoke wedding cake, to add that final wow factor for a wedding. Why do people pay more than £30 an hour for a painter and decorator/plumber/electrician etc and not bat an eyelid but bulk at wedding cake prices. It takes skill to do these cakes, like it does a plumber to put in your new bathroom or electrician to re-wire your house.

I know you are on a budget but most wedding cake decorators will try and design a cake solely for you, within your budget. No one else will have one like yours and in my case you will know that is lovely tasting, fresh, bespoke and beautiful.

If someone has £100 budget for a cake, are you going to make one big enough for 80 people to have some?

No, you're not are you, so that's why people go for the supermarket cakes. Some people just want one tier with no fuss and frills, and lets face it, once it's all hacked up, they all look the same!

There's nothing wrong with those cakes if that is what people choose to buy and they can decorate them as they wish plus they do taste lovely.
Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...
  • I too make wedding cakes (hi Christine, nice to meet a kindred spirit :)) and cannot agree with the comments that all cakes are the same 'once it's all hacked up'. As for £100 budget for 80 guests, it's unrealistic.

I understand people are on a budget and this site is aimed at saving you money, but this one is a false economy. The number of beautiful wedding albums I see at wedding fairs, where the couple have obviously spent a lot of money on a photographer, and there they are, cutting a mass produced cake.

If you want to save time, money, and stress, go to a bespoke decorator. By the time you've collected your cake from the shop, driven to the venue and set it up (not as easy as M&S make out), the overall package is more expensive. And as Christine said, your cake is like everyone else's.

It's meant to be your special day - have something special!
  • Too often people spend a fortune on cake that doesn't get eaten! I would rather spend my money on something else than something that not everyone is going to eat! I made my own by the way so mine is completely individual! If I wasn't confident making my own it would no doubt have come from somewhere 'mass produced'
