Personally I use the name of Fred Bo11sock, of an old address. Just wondered if they actually mail there!
I can sort of imagine the conversation 10 months down the line

Customer: This has broken and I want a new one
store: Certainly sir do you have your receipt
Customer: No I lost it but I bought it in April last year
Store: No problem sir, what was your name
    Customer: Mr smith
store: I am sorry sir you are incorrect the only one we sold that month was to a Mr Bollsock you must be mistaken.
Customer: no that is the name and address I gave you
Store: oh certainly, if you give me a credit card in that name we will refund the money
customer: but my credit cards are in the name of Mr SMith
store: no problem sir we will refund by cheque and post it out to you
customer: but i don't live there
store: oK sir if you give me 5 minutes i will get one written for you
    :
customer: this cheque is made payable to mr Bollsock and is crossed .. it is no good
store: sorry sir we can only refund to the original purchaser

    :D

Indeed but it is an extra risk that you don't need to take so why take it - (unless you are Jeremy Clarkson and trying to prove a point that is! )
:rotfl: There is no new additional risk except in your own mind ... why are people so paranoid. If you are that paranoid (particularly since you mention jc who got caught by a very well known loophole which, I am led to believe, is actually traceable) for goodness sake make sure you never carry or use cheques, debit cards or credit cards ... the mere fact of owning such things puts you at a much much higher risk than giving a cashier your postcode. And don't forget all those muggers hanging about on street corners and the vast swathes of paedophiles after our children.

Lets try to keep some perspective of reality here.
The police warn about leaving the empty boxes for desireable products outside your house.
Actually the police give a lot of common sense advice .. however funnily enough I have never heard them say do not give a cashier in PC World your postcode.

PC World, in Exeter at least, will not issue a VAT receipt unless you virtually open a "Business Account" with them. I did that, under duress, because like others I just needed to get back quickly to the office with the bits. Now of course I receive a deluge of junk mail from PC World and others they have sold the address on to. I put my address on the registration because it's also my office.

It's illegal for them not to issue a VAT invoice or sales voucher with every sale. How do they get away with that?

i am not convinced you are right there (but am open to be corrected). I was under the impression that there is no legal requirement to issue any kind of receipt for non business sales ... hence why there is no legal requirement on the customer to produce one if asked.

Also small business's or eBay traders that have a low turn over might not be registered for VAT so can't give one out so theres obviously no law forcing them to do it. I'm not going to research it as it's not that important to me but that may mean there is no such law at all.

Actually just thinking about it I worked in retail for 13 years. I'm surprised I was never told it's the law to give out a VAT receipt so you must do it, which I would have expected to have heard at least as some point. That also indicates to me there is no such law.

    It's not illegal.

However, a well-run courteous business will always ensure that its employees ask a purchaser "would you like / do you need a VAT receipt?"

But of course, we're talking about PC World here.

Got to say not mad keen on loads of companies having names and addresses, even the govment departments burn them to dvd and then loose them.
I would suggest using a company called Novatech they are based in Portsmouth and Bristol, have supurb staff who know everything, they prices are very seldom betered and their own branded products are exceptionally well put together. go have a look at http://www.novatech.co.uk
I don't use their delivery as the portsmouth is just down the road but i am told by others it is good aswell.

    I live nowhere near.
How can I order from them because I am "not mad keen on loads of companies having names and addresses".

OP. Do you ever order online? If so how do they get the items to you?
