Gas cooker 'may not be installed in flats' - why not?

  • Gas appliances have been illegal in high-rise dwellings since the 1960s due to a gas explosion in a tower block in London. I learned this from an Open University program on terrestrial tv one night a few years ago. So, just like myself we are ALL electric. & I belive same goes for Calor Gas/etc type of fuel heaters. HTH:)

my m8 was getting a new kitchen and as his old built in electric cooker and gas hob (replacing our electric hob) were better than ours he said we could have it,

well we started doing the kitchen up and the first job was to get a new boiler, the guys who installed it says that due to this new regulation we would have to get a different hob as the one we had didn't have a flame failure device, like you we noticed that comet and currys didn't sell any hobs with a flame failure device, we ended up getting a whole new cooker and hob from b&q.

out off all the shops we asked about hobs with flame failure not one of the assistant knew what we were on about.

if you look at the them in the shops just pull the little metal ring that's on top of the burner, if you see and extra piece of metal that looks like another ignition then that's the flame failure thermostat.

Good morning: As is typical in the gas industry, the goalposts have been moved yet again :wall: IGEM has now issued the following (See Note 3).... http://www.igem.org.uk/download/document/IGE-G-5_Amendments_(January_2008).pdf

In effect, retailers will still sell gas cookers without FSDs for use in flats etc and CORGIs will legally be able to install them in flats/multi-dwelling buildings until an unspecified date. No official notification to CORGIs, just happened to see a post in a trade forum about the 'modifications'.....does the left hand know what the right hand is doing:think:

So let me get this right .This is IGEM in cohort with CORGI decidng this .It's not some Government legislation . First we have the rool that doesn't allow gas cookers to be supplied WITH the flexible connection ( previously if you were replacing like with like you just unpluggesd one and plugged in the other ) ..now you need to get a Corgi to supply and fit the hose and now we have this .Sounds a lot like IGEM and CORGI making work for their own boys does it not .

Now I am even more confused .Does this mean you CAN still get new appliances without the FSD fitted after 1/6/2008 .

    I am awfully confused too!

I need to find a right cooker to buy and I've just enquired about the FSD and this Corgi gas engineer said, 'What are you on about? This is the first time I've heard of. We'll fit any kite marked bog standard gas cooker' Mind you, he said he'll charge £160 to fit it!

Which reminds me that Corgi have not replied to my e-mail of several days ago on this very confusing issue .
