Yes, cut the pattern pieces in half lengthways and then in half across the width a lay out the pieces to the size you want. Check first that the sleeve/armholes are going to be large enough as that is a tricky area to enlarge. Maybe someone else has some ideas for that?

Is this an original 1950s pattern? if so, i would make it up in some cheap fabric first, as pattern shapes have changed considerably since then - ie waists were alot smaller and backs narrower, so the proportions would be wrong

it may well be that you will need to customise the pattern in different areas, rather than just doing a standard re-scale

I dont think patterns went above a size 14 then, and a size 14 pattern nowadays, bears no relation to a shop-bought size 14, so i would assume one from the 50s, would be even more undersized

Just another thought to add regarding making the pattern bigger.............

I would trace the pattern onto pattern paper and leave the original intact.

  • Hi Nuttywoman,
You may already have started this but ..
Tracing the pattern onto pattern paper (or even newspaper) as Rikki says, is the best way to do this - just make sure you transfer over all the markings. You can then alter all the pattern pieces to fit you properly. As Flea says, armholes are the trickiest area to get right, especially as you're dealing with a 1950's pattern and the sizings are very different.
Alter the pattern as Bella says but I'd also suggest measuring the new pattern against a garment you already have and that fits you properly. You can then ensure the armholes and underarm seams fit you properly.

    Good luck.

    Hello sewers!

I'm new to this malarky, please can you help. I'm reading a tutorial about how to make bias binding, but I'm not cutting it out of a neat square piece with a selvedge, as the tutorial says, but out of an old shirt, Should the bias mean that the stretch is lengthways, or should the bias tape stretch in it's short fat dimension IYSWIM?

    Any help very welcome!:D

Bias means the strip is cut diagonally across the weave of the material and it will then stretch lengthways.
