Hello, I have not been in this thread before but I thought I would take a look. Do you know where I could get a sewing machine from? I cannot afford to buy an expensive/brand new one, any ideas please? As I would like to in the near future make a dress for work etc. Thanks

why not try freecycle? That's how I got my sewing machine - it is a bit ancient but works really well. It is amazing what people will give away.

I have posted a thread in freecycle to see if anyone is giving a sewing machine away. Thanks for the advice.

have still not opened box with new sewing machine in but i have finally managed to read complete thread and am so excited. i cant believe that some people are able to make everything they wear, even stuff like bras and undies. what with then being able to knit socks you would never need to go in a shop again. i have four wardrobes with clothes in ranging from a size 14 to a size 26. the 26 is what i am now. am having a gastric bypass in a few months and am so looking forward to learning how to alter some of my favourite bits that are just to nice, new and expensive to just give away. so i have kept back some of the things i may be able to alter and the rest has gone to the charity shop for someone else to alter maybe. have got myself really worked up with the thrill of it all, even at this time of night i am even thinking of going downstairs and opening the box. have set up a word document and am pasting anything i think may be helpful so keep all the tips and patterns coming, you have one new convert :j :j :j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j

tesco currently have a sewing machine for about £25 - has all the twiddles and knobs you would need, to get you creating

Or if you have a bit more money, they also have some for around £50 mark

Well done Rikki. I did look at it, but never bothered as i hadnt got the magic ingredients, and dont want to spend anymore money on things, until I have started to use up the stuff I have here. Got some handbags and shopping bags etc to do, as well as the cushions that I want to do.
I also want to make some babyclothes out of the things that I have lurking around the place. Surprised at what I still had considering I gave most of my stuff away in 2004 to Northampton College, thinking I would not be sewing anymore!. (Kept the sewing machines though, couldnt bare to part with them. Although two of them have gone by the way side, loaning them out to people and not getting them back, and then moving.!) Before my frugal days!

I signed up to BurdaStyle earlier, and they just sent me an email with a link to a free dress pattern. Am off on my holidays today, back Tuesday, so I will try it then.
