    Hey everyone!

So what does everyone think about the Govt. giving vouchers/cash incentives for obese people to lose weight...?

I have heard them going on about it on the news and Loose Women!

It's a bit late now so probably one for tommorrow..

    Hey scottishchick27 welcome,

You will meet everyone tommorrow, as I guess they are all catching zzzz now!

I find this place an encouragement and if you want you can join into the 5lb challenge, (someone else will explain, as I am not that great at explaining stuff).

As for your aim, it seems achievable definetely, I would say to get rid of the yo-yo dieting thoughts, because i just don't think its sustainable!

All the best with your losing, we are all in the same boat here, trying to lose or maintain a healthy weight, so I feel free to join in!

  • Morning all...

Reporting a STS this week....Not suprising as I haven't been that motivated due to al the work stress but I have been trying to monitor what I eat on an avergae not caring day (I say...I don't care as in...still gearing towads the healthier side of things but at the same time not as good as I would otherwise have been...if ya know what I mean)...

Completed two days of the foosfocus diary (I normally forget about such things so quite an achievement in itself)....I now know that when I don't care eat I'm always below 2000kcals....(if it goes drastically wrong and I eat out it tips over me thinks...)...It is really interesting to see how your food goes towards each meal...and I think my absolute danger points are 3pm and as I'm cooking tea....

There was no gym this week either as I simply havn't found the energy to go...

when I logged a few good days I notcied that my average calories were coming in at 1500....without much trying....which makes me think that the article missy g referred to might be a wee bit generous....So If I survive my first lecture on monday I'm going to have another go at keeping t the food focus and being good and seeing if I lose what is predicted....has anyone got their pedometer from the times health club yet? I'm looking forward to it now although I know walking makes no difference to me at the mo... (I think my body has gotten used to it :-( )

    anyhow...enough of the rambling....

I think QT brought up the vouchers for slimmers stuff....personally I think if they have the cash to roll out this sort of scheme then they should use the money to improove nutritional education in schools or hold classes for adult education....

Here's where I'm going to be argumentative and ask does anyone really believe that people in this day and age need educated in knowing what's good for us to eat? I can understand that children may need some education because their parent's may have brought them up on takeaways and stuff, but most of the adults know that everything in moderation/5 portions of fruit and veg per day/30 minutes exercise x 5 per week is healthy for us. But we choose to be couch potatoes and eat rubbish inspite of all the information that's out there.

I think the money would be better spent on helping individuals understand why they abuse their bodies by overeating/ dieting to skeletal proportions...

Has anyone seen supersize v's superskinny?.
Goal for 09: Get fit and foxy. target weight 11st. 5/80.

    scott welcome:D

delly yes saw super skinny v super size, interesting , I watch them all and this one is not really any different to the others, the large lady was super hungry and lost 1stone and the super skinny one was force fed and put on 5lb, not really scientific:rotfl: :rotfl: eat less, loose, eat more gain, uhm;)

  • hmm, haven't seen that one delly. I too am getting tired of this attitude that the government has to 'do something' about obesity. Every consumer survey ( opposed to govt suvey) I have ever read tells me that people accept responsibility for their own diets. Jasper Carrott once did a sketch which can probably be found on youtube somewhere where he said the whle problem is that we forget the bottom hole is smaller than the top hole ( IYSWIM)! Working in the food industry I do get very tired of this attitude that 'the obesity crisis' is all down to the nasty evil manufacturers who are sneaky and make people fat.

    grrrrrr.

feeling better today . . . . no 'incidents' yet . . . . Although we now have a problem. OH was supposed to be going out tonight with his mates and still wants to go. I don't want to be on my own trapped in the house. He argues - quite rightly - that if the roles were reversed I would have gone out today. I argue that it would have been from obligation as much anything else. But i don't want to be stuck in on my own!

Some great stuff on here since I last logged on, thanks guys!
Welcome to Scottishchick, great to have you with us and already sharing your sense of humour; I like it! The 5lb monthly challenge does exactly what it says on the tin :D We aim to lose 5lbs in a month. The chart is posted every Wednesday, at the moment it's being done by the lovely Grannynise - all you need to do is post your loss on whatever day you normally weigh and it will be picked up and added to the chart. ( Putting it in a different colour might help make this easier).
Thanks for the links BB, I shall be looking into them later. I am relaxing into the decision thankyou, you and Victory are right, indecision is the worst! We stripped the bedroom yesterday afternoon, OH is just finishing it off now bless him. The picnic idea sounds lovely, hope you have a wonderful time getting out of the house.
Suggs, I popped into my local store, don't need the scales as I already have Tanita ones but I think I'll get the hand held monitor as that does muscle mass etc and is only £9.99 at mo. Not sure how accurate these things are, but as long as it's consistent I'll be happy. None in my store though so will need to try another - she tried to sell me something different and tell me it was the same, even though it did completely different things, DOH! Good luck with the derby, hope you thrash them and your finger holds up.
Seen lots of people out running today (prob training for Bath Half) and teams off to play sport - now that's where my envy kicks in Vic
Serendis, well done for monitoring how it's going and starting to see some patterns - even if you can only do odd days it all helps. Good luck with your lecture, you nervous?
Ajax, if you're out there I hope Mrs A got her plaster off ok and that you're both good.
Vix, dancing sounds fab, that's on my to do list when I get well enough. Cute dog!
KPC, you sound like you're on the mend slowly, glad to hear that, sorry you have to miss your talk though. Why is it you don't want to be on your own tonight? Just cabin fever?
Interesting discussion sparked by the obesity incentives thang - I'm in agreement with all of you actually, despite the contradictions! Sadly Delly, there are still lots of people out there who DON'T know what constitutes a healthy balanced diet and do need more advice. I also agree that personal responsibility is very important in combating obesity and I do also think it's a good idea that a product's nutritional values are as transparent as possible. The idea of providing more pyschological input on body image and self harm through food is a great one too. Interesting debate, would love to know other people's thoughts. I'm still with Scottishchick though, give me a voucher for about 18 lbs and I'll be happy :D

    Morning all,

When this topic comes up, I tend to think about the cultural and lifestyle differences between countries with an obesity issue, and countries without.

I haven't seen anything about this 'cash incentive' scheme. Sounds like a bit of a minefield to me!

Certainly a good topic for debate, and very interesting to read what people are saying. It is so nice that we can talk about such things and have slightly differing opinions without it becoming confrontational here.

KPC, so glad to hear you're feeling better!

I will try to come back for a bit more of a chat later! Have a good weekend folks.
