Fixing a broken zip?

Brilliant! The advice on here has rescued my top quality black leather Smith & Canova handbag which 8 years ago cost £55. How much would it be now?? The zip was coming apart and not staying closed in use. I have gently opened it, pushed teeth together, put silicone on it and run the zip up and down several times. All seems fine! And I polished the bag too, to encourage it to do its best for me this winter.
Saving, thanks to MSE, must be over £100!0 -

Hello fellow oldstylers
Disaster has struck and the zip to my son's snowsuit has broken. The zip was closed and it popped open all the way down. I've had a play with it and I can get the teeth together by putting the pull bit of the zip back on but it's not catching properly. Can i fix this or does it need a new zip?
any advice greatly appreciated!0 -
I'm no sewing expert, but a friend of mine used graphite on a zip I was having problems with.

You can sometimes get the zip teeth to knit together again, but there is usually a weak point at which it will pop open again. If the weak point is low down then you can put a few stitches jsut above this point so the zip does not go all the way down.... but if the weak point is high up then you'll need to replace the zip I'm afraid. Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree!0

As you pull the zip up the teeth are squeezed together as the "puller bit" narrows at the bottom...
There are two main possibilities...
1) The "bumps and cups" that lock together are worn - so that'd pretty much be the end of the zip
2) The low end of the "puller bit" has opened up and isn't quite locking the "bumps and cups". Take a look at the puller and if you can see that it has opened up - you "might" be able to gently squeeze it back square with a pair of pliers.
Zips these days never seem to last more than five minutes. Or is it just me?
Thank you..
you have just saved me from buying a new jacket, tried the pliers and it worked a treat0 -
Hello. Can you help me, please? The zip on my M&S suit trousers keeps sliding down. It knits up OK, just won't stay up. This is a new phenomenon. Only started today.
I do it up. Within a few minutes, it's back at half mast.
This has been going on all day and is driving me batty! Any suggestions on what I can do to get it to stay up? There is no handy button to loop over some elastic. I'll replace the zip if necessary, but I was wondering if it was something to do with the slider getting stretched. Could I bash it gently back together with a hammer? Would that work?
I think it's a nylon zip with a metal slider.

I had a pair of boots from charity shop, and they were beautiful but within five minutes of putting them on the zip opened up. I found that running a pencil (I think I read that tip on here too) solved the prob - and three or four years later those zips are still working perfectly! I didnt have to redo them - just did it the once, and my grandkids always choose those boots for dressing up, so they take some abuse!0
