Fixing a broken zip?

I have a perfectly good pair of trousers where just the handle part of the zip has broken off. I can still do it up but it comes down again. Do I really have to replace the whole zip (can't do that anyway), or is there a way to make it stay done up?

    Thanks, Ness.

Doesn't sound too hopeful, I'm afraid. Usually on the 'handle part' of the zip, there is a little 'spike' (for want of a better word) that grips in between the teeth of the zip and help it to stay put.

If you don't know how to replace a zip yourself, have a look in your local paper, there may be somebody advertising 'minor repairs' who could fix it for you. Sometimes local newsagents have phone numbers on their advertising boards as well. Or ask at your local haberdashery shop, if there is one.
  • I use a safety pin on the inside of the trousers or skirt to keep the zip up and it's easy enough to undo if you need the little girls room.

Ask around your friends - see if anyone can recommend a repairer.

Or you could stitch the area up (as long as you can still slip the trousers on and off).

    Best of luck.

I had a pair of jeans that did this. I put a key-ring ring through the zip handle (you could do this through the loopy bit the zip handle is attatched to the zip by) and when I pulled the zip up, I put the key-ring ring over the button, to hold the zip in place.

    Hope that makes sense!!

I've done it with a small elastic band. Slip it into the "handle" on the zip, then through itself IYSWIM - like this :D Slip the other end of the elastic over the button.

    Hi

I have a racksack, perfectly good apart from the zip which doesnt do up properly (it keeps splitting when I do it up). Its a plastic zip. Is there anything I can do to fix it or should I just resign myself to buying a new bag?

I can't help I'm sorry but would be interested if the zip can be salvaged myself as it often happens to school backpacks & coats.

I doubt you can do anything to the current zip. If it is a good quality sack and you have, or could borrow, a sewing machine you could maybe replace it, but it would be a fiddly job. To be honest I wouldn't even try on a cheap bag.
