Fixing a broken zip?

  • My son's school bag kept doing this, I managed to make the zip stay together by fastening the zip and then over sewing with cotton above the part that splits (hope this makes sense:rolleyes: ). It stops the zip from going down too far into the part that seperates.
His bag lasted a few extra months but I have had to buy a replacement in the end.

how has the zip broke. is it possible to carefully either undo the staple at the end or to snip through as far to the end as possible pull the pull of and rethread it ( can be difficult ) making sure you get both sides in to the pull at the same times so as the teeth align then sew or replace staple - used to make trouser in a factory and the fly zips were made of three seperate bits , teeth ,pull and staple the teeth were made on rolls several meters long which was cut and then had the above process done.

That is so annoying isn't it but I don't think there's much you can do. Sorry!

I had a beautiful weekend bag which my daughter borrowed and managed to break the zip. It was a very long zip and I hoped I could get it repaired because it was an expensive bag. I took it to several bag shops/leather good shops and they all said the same "we have nobody who repairs things now."

Not so long ago you could get zips replaced in sleeping bags, big jackets and even tents but not it seems, any more.

    Thanks for all the replies

Think it is going to be very fiddly to fix the zip and sewn into the fabric. Will search ebay or Tk Maxx as usually have good deals there

Hello, I am looking for some advice as I managed to brake off the zip fastner from my beloved leather jacket last night. I still have the fastner but it's broken in two, and completly detatched. Is this fixable or will I need a whole new zip?

    Many thanks in advance!

It may be mendable ;) I've taken zipped items into a leather goods shop - they have someone collect every week, and return them mended the next :T

I'll add this to the exiating thread to give you more ideas.
