It wasn't that I didn't believe you - more surprised than anything. In fact I have to thank you for pointing it out as I was considering getting one in a couple of months.boogiemaster wrote:My local pc shop that i have an account with told me that they dont like certain disks.

I had the 106 and had no problems whatsoever and a friend of mine had the 107 which had problems with some blank discs. When it came for me renewing my writer I chose the latest (at the time) 108 model which was ok (same as the 106) was for me. Now the 109 is fussy same as the 107 was!
So far I'm lucky in getting drives that aren't as fussy. With the 107 being fussy I assumed that this had been sorted in the 108 and as I've never had probs so I assume it has. Due to the 108 being ok I naturally (which turned out to be a mistake) assumed that the 109 was ok.0 -
Thanks again BBB_UK for your help.
Unfortunately had packaged up Pioneer 109 and returned it to Savastore yesterday morning so don't know if it is the Pioneer or the PC's ASPI driver? Run the ClonyXXL file as you suggested and here is the result, does aspi32 sys N/A mean that I need to download this?
If the Pioneer isn't faulty there's an admin charge from Savastore details below, if the Pioneer 109 is faulty however I wonder if they will replace it with an NEC as I don't like the sound of it now having read other posts.
Information
WindowsXP service pack 2
ASPI driver
Wnaspi32.dll N/A
aspi32 sys N/A
wowpost.exe Not Needed
Winaspi.dll Not Needed
apix.vxd Not Needed
aspienum.vxd Not Needed
Extract from Savastores T&C
"For items that are returned as faulty, where no fault is found, a charge of £10.00 plus the cost of return carriage and VAT will be levied (£35.00 for Aries PCs). The charge will automatically be charged to the credit/debit card used to make the original purchase. By returning the item(s) it is deemed that you have accepted these terms and authorise us to debit your card as appropriate. A service report detailing the charges will be sent to you when the non-faulty item(s) are returned back to you."0 -
According to discussions in this forum Dells must have the fastest device at the end of the cable.
I have had a similar problem with my CDRW drive going to PIO mode (SLOW) even when UDMA is set. I have not yet managed to try this solution though.

Thanks tosh, wish I had not been so quick to return Pioneer to Savastore, looks like problem may be the PC and that I should have had Pioneer at and of IDE cable and set as Master? I did try Pioneer as Master but not at end of cable, didnt know this made a difference, also had Pioneer set up on its own and set as master but didnt go into bios set up as suggested in the link you posted, I guess I will know soon enough when Savastore test the Pioneer0

It would appear that ASPI isn't installed according to those results. I'd create a system restore point and download & install the ASPI drivers from Adaptec's website above.
They do say that when having a drive as a master then it is best to have it at the end of the cable but I've found it it works both ways (not sure about Dell computers though).
Also the writer will perform better if using the 80pin IDE cables (blue connector on one end that plugs into the motherboard) but your motherboard has to support speeds greater than UDMA 100+.
Also, though some people would probably disagree but I would have the writer as Master (on the end of the cable) with your reader as Slave.0 -
Have updated ASPI driver as you recommended, status now reads
ASPI driver
Wnaspi32.4.71.2.0
aspi32 sys 4.71.2.0
wowpost.exe Not Needed
Winaspi.dll Not Needed
apix.vxd Not Needed
aspienum.vxd Not Needed
PC is a Dell Dimension 8300, its 2 years old can you tell me how to check if the UDMA is 100+., as for the IDE cable will have to open PC up and check this, will I have to physically count the number of wires in the cable or should it be marked, I feel like a real PC novice asking these questions, (that's probably because I am, 6 years down the line and never found out how they worked) thank goodness for MSE and people like you guys for help.
Cheers

ASPI drivers looking better now

As for looking at your UDMA/PIO (ATA) speeds right click my computer, properties, device manager.
Find the ATA controller - Primary and Secondary Entries
Double click the Primary 1st and look in the tabs for UDMA/PIO mode. UDMA should be available for both controllers.0 -
