Problem with Pioneer 109 DVR-109

I replaced my Samsung CDRW model sw-248 with a Pioneer 109 DVD/CD -writer in my Dell Dimension 8300. When trying to copy a music CD the pc wont recognise that there's a blanc CD in the Pioneer writer. I have been using Roxio for almost 2 years without any problem so guess I have gone wrong somewhere when installing the Pioneer. Have checked trouble-shooter etc and cannot find any problem, also checked install new hardware and it says this device is working properly.Only installed Pioneer today so have obviously slipped up somewhere, any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

Hi did you install the drivers that came with the new drive?

Can you read a disc (eg look at the contents/directory)? If so, then you installed it correctly but it can still be other things - like:-

Have you the very latest version of Roxio that supports that writer? Also, the software (Roxio) and Pioneer 109 have to support the blank disc as well.

To determine if it is actually the writer at fault and not Roxio then download the trial version of Nero here. Its 30mb in size.

Who is the manufacturer of the blank disc?

All DVD/CDROM readers/writers use Windows' generic drivers so don't come with any drivers. It is likely that Roxio doesn't support that writer especially if its an old version of Roxio as the Pioneer 109 is relatively new.

Have downloaded trial version of Nero as suggested but still no luck, inserted music cd to play and all that happens is green light, disc spins a couple of times then stops. Tried coppying with Nero and music files read from D drive OK but wont transfer to E drive, Pioneer 109 (set it as slave when I fitted it)

the latest firmware 1.50 might also help. also think you need a Twin UDMA to get the best out of it. I have had no issues using my 109 and Nero.
Ever stop to think and forget to start again?

Hi Kestra like you I assumed that there would be a driver for this unit and searched the Pioneer site only to find a firmware update, thanks for the suggestion anyway.

Try the drive as a master and on its own and then try seeing if it can read a normal data disc (game, software disc, etc). If its still no then the chances are its DoA (Dead on Arrival) but to know for sure you would have to try it in friends computer as a master on its own. That way when returning it and they ask all sorts of questions you can say you've tried it as a master on its own (without a slave) and in a friends computer and windows recognises it (as it assigned a drive letter) but it does not read any disc you put in it.

UPDATE: If the drive can't even read normal CD's then it is not likely (is possible though) to be a firmware problem.

Thanks, however when searching through the Pioneer site I downloaded this. I think I will uninstall all of the old Roxio software and go out and buy Nero from PC World and start all over again. looks like I will need Nero anyway.

Or, if you don't want to spend money on CD/DVD burning software, you can always check out this thread at https://www.neowin.net
http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=119821 . There are a large number of brilliant programs on that list.

Look under CD/DVD burning and you might find a program that works as well as the others, minus the cost.
    Boo!

Tried setting it as Master, no difference, tried to get it to play DVD and music CD but keep getting same error message, disc tray empty, insert disc! Guess it might be a dud machine?
