Sounds like they aren't the best neighbours to start off with-and they probably expected you to know that they have had a baby as to them it's probably the hugest thing in their life right now -maybe not fair but new-parentitis strikes us all like that
I'd drop a note through the door saying you didn't realise they had a baby and saying that although you don't have any imediate DIY plans you do have some in the future and would be happy to come and see them to discuss what is a reasonable time to finish working once your plans are more definite to minimise disturbing the baby's sleep. Chances are been so reasonable will wrong-foot them-they probably over-reacted because either they are both short of sleep (occupational hazard of new parebnthood but sleep deprivation IS awful) or had just spent hours getting the baby off to sleep and as soon as it dropped off you drilled !
Not worth turning it into a feud and your letter (which of course you'll keep a copy of) may be useful evidence that you are the reasonable one if things don't settle.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Of course you can't be evicted from your own home. We all know thatsome people fall in the noise sentive bracket - and they seem to think she is.
I'm 99.99% sure of this, but can't point to a source to confirm it ... but .... The test is what is reasonable, with "reasonable" being measured by what the average person would deem to be reasonable. So ... you do not need to "tip-toe" around a neighbour if they are (over) sensitive. It's only your behaviour that needs to pass the reasonable test. If they are sensitive, then ... let's face it ... they are going to find the behaviour of any and every other reasonable neighbour unacceptable.
Buy her a naff bunch of flowers, feign an apology and just get on with your life - in a reasonable way, of course:rotfl:

I laugh at that, as I been here since the house was built 4 years ago this may0 -

So how long have they been next door? were they there roughly the same time or are they more recent occupants? do you know much of their past? do you get on with them at other times?Winnings

neighbours from hell:rotfl: (joke)0 -
Op it sounds like you were very considerate, Unfortunately new parents do tend to lose the plot a bit as i discovered at my last flat, best to ignore them until the hormones have settled a bit, No doubt they make noise as well, but for some bizarre reason noise from babies isnt classed as a nuisance.
I find the best thing is to avoid neighbours at all costs, just because they happen to live next door does not make them friends.0 -
Personally I wouldnt do any noise work in my home after 8pm unless I had spoken to the neighbours first.
We were drilling at 10.30 am on a Sunday morning a few weeks ago and our neighbours started banging on the wall  . My other half was so annoyed he just carried on running his drill eventhough he'd finished.
This is a family that have never worked in the 20 years that we have lived here, have six children that play music and have the tv blaring out so loud that we had to move our settee away from the adjoining wall because we couldnt hear our tv properly. lol0 -
I think a few seconds drilling at 7:40 pm is perfectly reasonable. Unlike my neighbours in the flat above me who decided to do an hours DIY on their floor at 10:40 pm 2 days ago! An hours worth of drilling and hammering right above my bedroom. It's the third time they've decided to do some late night diy recently and although it's annoying we haven't considered complaining, it's not like they're doing it every day.0
