I keep reading about eating Seasonal, local grown veg in an atempt to save money on the shopping , but how do I know which ones are in season? I know that some of the foods are "flagged" as Local Produce but what about fruit? Hasn't the apple season finished now ? and you can't get bananas locally grown in Ipswich ?

I'm trying to support local farmers and be a bit more "green" so does that mean eating just cabbage and cauli for the next few months?

    Hi frogga,

Your local supplier will normally be able to advise you on what's in season, also have a look at this informative website www.eattheseasons.co.uk

BBC good food website also has a section on what is in season.

My favourite farm shop, labels the produce with the variety and where it is grown - if you just go for the things marketed 'local' or 'Hillers' (the name of the farm) everything is seasonal and super cheap!

cabbage, purple sprouting, parsnips, leeks, jeruselem articokes are all in season now. also some apples store very well so stored local ones will be "in season". If you want to do it to save money then just buy whatever is cheap - this will mainly be seasonal stuff but will include some non-seasonal stuff which is cheap for some other reason. Also "local" does not necessarily mean seasonal, you could buy (very expensive) local strawberries grown locally in heated, lit glasshouses out of season or you could buy non-local oranges imported cheaply when they are in season where they are grown. The idea that local food is healthier comes from teh fact that it will not have travelled so far and therefore will be fresher but this is not necessarily true - an air freighted strawberry could well be fresher than a local one that has been hanging around for a while. In general though local food will be fresher adn better for you and cheaper food will probably be stuff that is in season. At teh moment not that much is in season - traditionally people would have been eating stored food, getting scurvy and going hungry.
