Just because veg is in season it sadly doesn't seem to follow that it will be cheap these days! One way to save is to work your menus around the 'loss leader' offers in places like Aldis. Recently I've been buying more frozen veg (green beans, cauli and broccoli) as it's much better value than fresh and just as good for you.

Swede, celeriac, onions, garlic, turnips, beetroot, spinach, chard, potatoes, squash (loads of kinds!), forced rhubarb, parsnips, cabbage, lettuces, carrots, leeks, kale, jerusalem artichokes, cauliflower, sprouts, broccoli.

    So more veg than fruit...
Yes, unfortunately winter's not a good time for UK produced fruit. There should still be apples from store around. They'll be good until March-after that though they become pretty tasteless.

Seasonal fruit at the moment are citrus fruits which although imported are good value now and bananas of course.

I do this too. For the cost of 1KG of frozen broccoli/cauli compared to fresh I get more for my money, plus it tends to last longer.

    Hi All

Hoping you can help me. I was wondering if anyone could tell me which vegetables are in season at the moment. I think I remember reading on here somewhere that these would maybe be less expensive than some others (does that make sense?!)

Then all I need to work out is what to do with them?!

Hi there  We have an exisitng thread with lots of websites showing seasonal foods ;) I'll add this one to keep ideas together.

  • We need to reduce our food bill, and the main way I can see to do this is to start eating more veg that is in season. I'm vegetarian and I normally eat loads of salads, but it occurred to me yesterday I'm probably spending about £80 a month on tomato and cucumber just for me    . This has to stop. I don't think I can go col-turkey completely, but I will try to reduce myself to getting salady bits once a month (at payday I expect) then being more sensible for the rest of the time!

So please Moneysavers, give me some inspiration - what is in season at the moment, and what can I make with it?!!!

I love salad too, but tend to try and make it a bit more seasonal (cheap!), grated carrot's, raisins, chick peas, grated beetroot etc bulks it out so you can use less cucumber and tomato. Rice and pasta salads are good too as very cheap.

    Hi Ladybird,

This website is useful for finding out what is in season and it gives tips on buying and recipes too:

    www.eattheseasons.co.uk

These sites may be useful too:

    www.iminseason.com

    BBC what's in season

There's a recent thread on eating seasonal food that should help so I'll add your thread to it to keep the suggestions together.

  • Cheers everyone. I will have a rummage through the links and see what catches my eye - I feel some soups coming on!

Now, i'm not sure if this is an irrational thought, but if aeroplanes are not able to fly into or out of the country then surely at some point there is going to be a shortage of fresh fruit and veg that we source from overseas, i.e. a banana shortage etc. So this got me thinking that perhaps we do indeed rely too much on overseas food imports. So, i want to make an effort to get things grown in the UK, however, I have absolutely no idea when the different fruit/veg are 'in season'. Any ideas of websites that can help? Apologies if there is already a thread about this, please could you direct me to it.

    Thanks in advance
    Lola
