There already is a shortage... (my job is as a fruit and veg buyer)
Try looking on www.eatseasonably.co.ukMan plans and God laughs...Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. But by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it introduces the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.0 -
I thought bananas and citrus came by boat?
I've always stuck to homegrown or shipped F&V and avoided airfreighted produce.0 -
Yes - generally they do... but things like sugar snap peas, baby corn and beans etc are flown inMan plans and God laughs...Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. Thanks for this useful thread and links. Funnily enough I went to my first ever farmers market today and I was impressed by the lovely food offered by small independent and local producers.

We planted purple sprouting broccoli months and months ago and lo and behold, it started sprouting about 3 weeks ago.
We have already harvested enough for about 6 meals for 2, as an accompaniment to our meals.
Would have cost us about 6 X £1.70 at least by now, as it seems to be jolly expensive in the shops.
This was from 3 big plants and there is still more coming.Felines are my favourite

Sprouting broccoli takes a long time to mature, we are just now having some delicious sprouts and hope that they will continue for a while to come....enjoy.

How exciting, in a few days the British asparagus season starts - I take advantage of it as it is so very short and we all love asparagus, I make risottos, omelettes, steam them, once I even made homemade hollandaise sauce to go with them!
I just cannot bring myself to buy asparagus air-freighted from Peru!
I agree with Lola321 about the possible impending shortage of imported foods. DH and I discussed this just earlier on, and wondered whether this occurrence (the volcanic ash thing) will be a wake-up call for people to stop relying on expensive and unnecessary imports, and try to become more self-reliant (we hope!).Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0
