Barclays PIN Sentry -8 digit code not reconized!!!

I've just called Barclays, got through quite quickly (I didn't select the pin-sentry option). The woman sounded like she had dealt with lots of complaints and said the standard things like, 'are you sure you want to downgrade your account', 'what is the problem with pin-sentry' etc. etc. However she put me on hold for about 3 minutes and came back to say the pin-sentry had now been removed and asked me to log in while I was on the phone. I all worked fine and now I am back to normal:D
Much to my surprise removing pin-sentry was instant and now I can throw this piece of junk away! She did remind me that I will not be able to set up new payments to individuals but she agreed when I said I can do that with telephone banking.
Thanks to everyone who has posted earlier in this thread, some really useful info.0 -
I actually received mine today and it was fine... I'm still appauled with the process I had to go through for implementation, and even more upset at the late and generic replies I received from customer services, but now I think I'll be OK.
I didn't bother reading instructions - just logged in as normal (using Egg Money Manager), then followed the directions on the screen and logged straight in. I've got the calculator thingy in my purse now and, while it's another thing to carry around, it's not so bad. It certainly does make things more secure.Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0 -

Barclays are really going to the dogs.........

Strange, as they said my previous PIN would be valid (I queried them about this). Basically, if I had not bothered phoning, they would have sent out a PinSentry device that would not even accept my old card! Thanks for your help.
Mine arrived this morning, along with my new card: after all that fuss, it was actually quite simple to use. If it really does pertain to additional security, them I'm happy to carry on using it (mind you, don't have a choice in the matter:rolleyes:).BLOODBATH IN THE EVENING THEN? OR PERHAPS THE AFTERNOON? OR THE MORNING? OH, FORGET THIS MALARKEY!

I experience a login failure rate using PinSentry of around 7 times out of 10....
If it fails twice in a row, the 3rd time is always a nervous moment.
So far, fortunately, it has never failed 3 times in a row (or as you say, it would lock me out).
The reason probably comes down to timings and how new numbers are generated.
Its probably quite complicated, so I won't hazard a guess...
Mine has also crashed once (just froze on the same text, and never turned off... even when removing the card).
I had to take a battery out and replace it, for it to work again.0 -

Inconvenient? Thats subjective at best. It is still way, way more convenient that having to go down to the bank. Yes, it may take 30 seconds longer to log into your account now but as a result its security is greatly improved.theyellowlizard wrote: »I know and understand the security reasons for it - but frankly, unless you're the sort of moron who gives out their bank details at the first sight of a phishing e-mail, you've no need for PIN-Sentry.
Interesting that you say you understand the security reasons for it and then make a completely ridiculous comment. Have you ever thought about the number of naive and vulnerable internet users exist in the world? No, they are not morons, they are just clearly not as brilliant as you are. This device makes their account far more secure. Even for computer literate users it still increases the security of their account.
With a roll-out of this size, problems are expected, although I am yet to have any myself but they will be ironed out and the vast majority will benefit.0 -

Your are quite right! Most of the PIN Sentry devices, manufactured in the Peoples Republic of China contain 4 x LR44 -General Purpose alkaline cells - 1.60v no load. These are low grade cells and often subject to internal leakage. This results in their average output (under load) decreasing considerably below 1.2volts per cell and here problems occur!!
Some of the prototypes did have a different battery - guess that yours might be one of the earlier versions if it is pre batch RO74182203

I had a lot of trouble signing in for the first time using the PinSentry machine. It seems I was too slow completing Step two. However in my own defence, it is a little confusing, because in the instruction book (and I think in the online demo as well) the place where you enter the ‘sentry generated’ code is shown as one box – but on the website it is actually two boxes. To further confuse you, the first box is a brown colour as if were ‘live’ and the second box is white and stays white even when you click into it. Why they have done this I can’t imagine, or am I missing something! Anyway, this is just the sort of thing that makes you re-read the instruction book - then you take too long and get timed out!0

I have business accounts at Barclays and personal at Lloyds.
Go for Lloyds any day so you can avoid the Barclays PIN Sentry - a total pain and un-necessary need to carry round a debit card or authentication card plus a PIN Sentry (the size of a calculator) plus a PIN. Lloyds and others have no need for this. Go with them.0 -

The last post on this thread was getting on for 2 years ago, I imagine everyone on it has solved their Pin sentry problems or have already moved banks.0 -
