Barclays PIN Sentry -8 digit code not reconized!!!

I have today used the PIN Sentry device for the first time with my Barclays Debit card issued in October 2007.

Followed precisely all of Barclays instructions. PIN Sentry device confirmed that my PIN number was correct and I generated the random 8 digit number.

typed the details in onto the screen. Result FAILURE.

Repeated the same as above and again FAILURE.

Realising that I have got only one more attempt at this today, I will wait until Friday before trying again. I am less than impressed..........and hope that Mrs Deanna Oppenheimer, with overall responsibility at Barclays for this Project will have the sense and wisdom to scrap the PIN Sentry system now.

Responses only required from anyone else experiencing the same problem

you MUST take the card out of the reader before pressing enter on the computer after inputting the generated number. Mine failed as well when i left the card in the reader
  • Just to confirm I'm a member of staff with barclays and having the card in the reader when you press enter is a load of crap. The card reader is not linked to the computer in anyway so this would not effect it. The main problem normally is that on the screen when it asks for the 8 digit number of pin sentry, people don't read the page correctly and don't enter either the last 4 or 5 digits off there card.

Other than that mines worked every time and so has my girlfriends without fail. And its a lot safer than before because you don't have a static pass number.

I did read the numbers correctly and entered them correctly and it still failed.

Why have you posted this on here, rather than contacting Barclays?

Do you have more than one card/account, does your other half also have a card, if so, have you tried theirs? My parents had a similar issue.

I don't personally like pin sentry but doubt that they will scrap it just because you are having problems.

Are you using a new debit card that has been issued to you specifically for using with the pin sentry, or your previous debit card? This happened to me when I was sent a pin sentry machine and I tried to use my existing debit card in it. It was only when the pin sentry literature arrived a fortnight later, I realised that I would need a new debit card that was specifically encrypted to use with a pin sentry machine. When the new card arrived, everything worked OK. If this isn't causing the problem, does anybody else in your house also have a Barclays Pin Sentry machine? Have they got mixed up? My Barclays new debit card doesn't appear to work in my husband's pin sentry machine which seems a bit strange as we operate two separate joint accounts.

I have had this problem. It always passes and works fine an hour or so later. My only advice would be not to keep trying because a certain number of "incorrect" attempts can lead to access being blocked.
  • The thing I don't like about the Barclays Pinsentry machine is that it is so damn big!

I travel a lot and access my accounts when i'm out. I cant be bothered to take this calculator with me all the time. I have another account with a non-english bank and they have a small dongle (size of a £2 coin) which upon pressing a button displays my temporary code to log on. It does not require me to swipe my card. It's purely an algorithm linked to a system clock. And this works really well!

I've today applied and got accepted for an A&L premier current account and will move my accounts over there in the next few months.

I have done the same thing and the Pinsentry was a big factor. What annoyed me was making payments using it - unnecessarily fiddly!

The only thing I can think of is the error I made when I first used this dreadful system. A well as your surname and membership number you need to put the last 4 digits of your card number on the site before using the pinsentry otherwise the service fails.
