  • The new cards should start with 4659 and the old ones start with 4539. I couldn't use the pin sentry until got new debit card.

Not true, my new card starts with 4539 and works fine. It's true that older cards do not work with the PINsentry, but the numbering is more to do with if your car is a 'pre-auth' card or not.

and hope that Mrs Deanna Oppenheimer, with overall responsibility at Barclays for this Project will have the sense and wisdom to scrap the PIN Sentry system now.

Why should they scrap a system that they have invested millions on just because a few people have teething problems...?

you MUST take the card out of the reader before pressing enter on the computer after inputting the generated number. Mine failed as well when i left the card in the reader

Make sure the fridge door is closed too.

(You can leave the card in the reader and balance it on your head if you want to, once it has generated a number for that session it doesn't matter)

Hmm....I don't think it works until you shout the magic words "show me the money!"

Of course they won't scrap it, even I know that. For some people the Pinsentry system is no problem at all. If you always log on to you bank account from one location (i.e. home) it's no problem. If you log on from different locations it does become a problem. Sure, you can take it with you, but you might loose it...and also forget to bring it with you.

For most people it might not be a problem. For me...it's certainly more hassle than it's worth which is why I chose to switch banks.....and I will get £50 for it since I did it via Quidco... I'll keep my Barclays account active and have 1 direct debit/standing order there just since I've had the account just over 8 years...adds a bit to your credit rating i think.
  • I have 3 PinSentry devices, 1 at home, 1 at work and I leave one in my glovebox. Not come across a time when I haven't been able to access my account when I needed to yet, although sometimes leaving my wallet in the car can cause some naughty words when I'm stretched out on sofa.
Added hindrance for sure - especially for those of us that are savvy and would never be duped by phishing scams anyway - but overall I believe it is good and only a mild irritant.

Thanks - that's given me a smile. I'd hate my Bank to come up with a major irritant ;)

I've heard of them ....... but they're totally harmless .... as long as you don't ring them.

Are you using a new debit card that has been issued to you specifically for using with the pin sentry, or your previous debit card? This happened to me when I was sent a pin sentry machine and I tried to use my existing debit card in it. It was only when the pin sentry literature arrived a fortnight later, I realised that I would need a new debit card that was specifically encrypted to use with a pin sentry machine. When the new card arrived, everything worked OK. If this isn't causing the problem, does anybody else in your house also have a Barclays Pin Sentry machine? Have they got mixed up? My Barclays new debit card doesn't appear to work in my husband's pin sentry machine which seems a bit strange as we operate two separate joint accounts.

    Dear Primrose,

Many thanks for your useful comments.

Yes, I am using the latest issued card the begins with 4659..........
Only have one card and one PIN Sentry device. Total failure. Have sent a complaint to Barclays..........
