I would suggest Tesco too, mini radio is only £2 and loads of other things around a fiver, buy two and pay £8.0

a small (and manly) manicure set. (When they are taller than me they'd better learn to cut their own nails!)
A multigadget penknife
Also next summer for his 18th birthday my eldest is likely to get

a small screwdriver with different blades or whatever you call the business end of a screwdriver
