RE D&A eye tests - I had a free one earlier in the year and then got my glasses reglazed elsewhere to that prescription. Felt sick & dizzy when I wore my glasses, so ended up going to the optician my family always used (he's v. good - teaches other opticians). Well, the glasses were re-glazed to the D&A prescription, but the prescription was wrong. Apparently it's quite easy to overprescribe for certain people (eg me!) because there's no clear cut off point between prescriptions. It's a mistake newly qualified opticians often make.
Anyway new prescription and reglaze fine, but D&A wouldn't give me any money back.
Moral of story, go see a good optician (get recommendations) then when you have an accurate prescription you can get cheap specs/reglaze.
  • are these free eye tests applicable for people like me who only wants contact lens prescription or is this a totally different test? How about the free eye test at Boots?
  • I took advantage of such an offer about 2 years ago. It's a con. It was recommended that I have bifocals when I said that my eyesight wasn't as sharp as it used to be.

I didn't buy from them and then went to another local optician, having bought some cheap off the shelf specs. This optician told me that he couldn't improve on the cheap specs I had as the prescription for both eyes was equal. He certainly did not recommend bifocals!

No such thing as a free lunch.

If the Opticians refuse to give you a copy of your prescription, please feel free to quote the Optician's Act (1989) at them.

Section 26, subsection (2) in Part IV of the act states that "it shall also be [the optician's] duty to give the person whose sight he has tested, immediately following the test, either a signed, written prescription for an optical appliance or a signed, written statement that he does not need to wear or use an optical appliance."

If you think you might have a problem, you can print off the relevant part and take it with you (http://www.optical.org/en/about_us/legislation/opticians_act.cfm)

If this still doesn't work, you can report them to the General Optical Council (the relevant complaint forms can be downloaded at http://www.optical.org/en/our_work/Investigating_complaints/How_to_make_a_complaint/index.cfm)

Thanks for mentioning this about opticians having to give prescriptions. I thought it was by law, but couldn't remember exactly what it was.

My last pair of glasses were bought from GlassesDirect off the internet and I'm quite happy with them. But I will have to purchase more glasses soon and will quite happily go back to them.

So we don't have to buy glasses from the people who do the eyetest but obviously it helps if you get a good eyetest.

I emailed D&A when the offer changed from free to half price and today they've email back with "Free Eye Test" voucher (and 20% glasses, however if I do need them will follow the advice of getting the prescription and going else where!?!)

The voucher is valid for any store.

Here are the terms in full -
    • Closing date: 03/02/2008
    • Special offer available at any Branch of DÀon presentation of this voucher.
    • This voucher cannot be used with an NHS eye test or any other eye test offer.
    • Offer only available to customers who have not had an eye test at Dollond & Aitchison in the last 2 years.
    • This reduction is not dependent on the purchase of a complete pair of glasses (frames, lenses and professional services)
    • Only one voucher per order, which must be surrendered at time of purchase.
    • Photocopied vouchers will not be accepted.
    • Eyewear provided by DÀEyeWear Ltd., Professional Services provided by DÀProfessional Services Ltd.
    Army.
  • I managed to get a free eye test with D&A through one of my newsletters from Nectar.

I'm booked in for this Saturday :)

  • If you managed to get a FREE eye test voucher last week but have not yet heard from D&A, I'd recommend you call your local D&A branch to arrange the FREE test directly. I did this today and have my test booked for Friday.
