I did apply for a radiography assistant post at the local hospital, it's only 1/2 mile away, but didn't even get an interview.. I have no hospital or caring experience at all so I guess lots of people beat me to that one.

I guess if I can commit myself to one years college at a time and see how things go then maybe that will work for me.. I just don't want to fail yet again.

The trick is to not be beat by it I tried three times for my promotion and the first two rejections devastated me it adds to the feeling of being useless try a healthcare assistants post to get some basic caring experience then move to your speciality.

2009 seems like miles away but as someone else said it really isn't and will be here before we know it.

As I said good luck you have the power to do anything you set yor mind to.

Just wanted to say, I've been treated no differently to other normal staff whilst temping (got a box of free smoothies by my feet!), and people are generally nicer to you as you're new. I also accrue holiday pay with my agency which is nice, and as for worrying about stability - well, you have nothing going on now for work, so to be frank, how could it get any more unstable? :) Catering college sounds ace, I love cooking and have always wanted to do that but I'd have to get used to unsociable hours and a pay cut, and I'd probably not enjoy it anymore! Oh, and I can't afford it :( You're n a very lucky position to be able to choose, missy! :)

P.S. A good way to build up experience is voluntary work :) have you been to do-it.org?

I have been to do-it.org yes, I was thinking of doing something, but to be honest I feel the need to help myself first if you know what I mean!

I guess I do need to think of myself being in a good position really, I have choices which is a lot less than a lot of people... so yes good point barbie.. thanks.. x

I'm going to go for catering college and see how it goes, I might not get in, it's interview based, so I guess I will have to get past that first.

I think the fact that I have so many options is really the thing that is bogging me down.. I just cannot decide what to do for the best. I think I would enjoy cooking more than anything else so this is what i'm going to aim for. If it doesn't work out I can try temping and doing OU course and aim for going Uni and doing Radiography.

I guess I just want to get started with something and i'm quite lucky that a catering course starts in January, apparently it's a new thing they have started this year, and also it's half the price of last year due to another change they had, so maybe it's fate!

Also, as Poppy said about getting experience in a caring role.. well, I don't actually want to be a carer, which doesn't help me in radiography as they want you to care for the public as such. I mean I am great at talking and interacting with people but I certainly don't want to be anyones carer.. so maybe radiography isn't going to be easy for me to get into..

My sister is a nurse and we are totally different.. haha - but she said the same thing about caring and I know I would just hate it! lol

Well i've contacted the college about the Catering course to become a Chef, that is a one year course and I need to do at least 2 years to become a fully qualified Chef.
I feel like I am jumping at something else again though, but I have always though about becoming a Chef and now seems like a good time to train. I would be out of the house about 30 hrs a week training at college.

Not sure what to do about Radiography. I'm not enjoying my Science courses with the OU and not sure if I would stick 3 yrs at uni studying for it ? So should I just take my chances with cooking?

Spoke to OH and had a bit of a cry and a rant about how no-one seems to encourage me and just constantly brings up my past failures against any future plans. He understands why I am upset and lost and wishes he could help but says it's my life, if I want something I have to stick at it.. so he is being a bit more supportive about it now and says he just wants me to be happy.

The Proffesional catering course starts 28th Jan, costs £650 for a year and they are holding interviews on Jan 16th.

I have applied online, as per the lady at the college suggested and she will send me a course prospecus and an interview in the post.

I'm nervous now, I feel like I am setting myself up for yet another fall and am going to make a fool of myself by quitting or not enjoying it etc etc and will wish I had just stayed at home and not moaned about it..

Do go and get some professional careers advice. You seem to be thrashing around at the moment with no definite aims or objectives. These sort of decisions are too important to be left to whims and the views of people on MSE. You'd go and see a doctor or solicitor if you needed help in these areas so get some specialist help ASAP.

I just wanted to let you know, you can do work and have a family or do a course if thats what you choose. I was 20 while doing a degree and baby. Im now 24, been a single mum, got my degree and work full time, i am also now going to soon be Bankrupt though!

It is only after all this time that I have decided to be a teacher! Yet my degree is in art!

I would say work for now, even if you decided to have a family, as it will not only build your confidence, but help you to meet new people and have some fun.

Maybe a careers advisor is the way to go then.. I have looked at all sorts though and apart from being a radiographer, chef or going in the forces (which boyf wouldn't allow, don't blame him), then I think I have narrowed it down..

The thing with me is I will try anything once, and everything new seems like fun to me.. lol.. I like to have my fingers in all the pies so to speak. I guess it's good because I have a wide range of working skills now.

I was thinking that once i'm a qualified chef I could be a restaurant manager, or run my own cafe / restaurant. I know that's a long way in the future, but I want a job that I can be self employed in if I want to.

If I trained to be a radiographer there is very little scope to becoming self employed and being a radiographer is very specialised.. whereas being a chef I can move into different areas if I want to.

Also, another major bonus is that I could possibly start at the end of the month, I know I should be patient, but i'm not.. :o and I really feel the need to get started on something..

  • If you're interested in being a chef why not try a bit of waitressing or something now? Or kitchen portering (ie washing up :)). Would give you the inside skinny and you should be able to pick up a job fairly quickly.

have to say the unsociable hours would do for me though!

This is my problem, I get all set to do something (like being a chef) and then I think of working in the evenings and I don't want to do that.. so am I kidding myself into doing something for the sake of it?

Maybe I should just do my OU stuff and then leave it for a year.. do some temping work in the meantime and then make a final decision on radiography if I can get into uni..

arghh, i'm confusing myself all the time, it's so annoying.. :o
