I wish tesco would vary the colour of it's Value range!!

I saw (or read) something that said that sometimes the product in the (for example) Tesco 'normal' range is the same as in the Value range but there is more of a mark up because of the fancier packaging - people pay a premium because they think it will be better.

Yes, 1 or 2 colour will make a difference to the basic cost price. I was suprised to see that Tesco now have full colour images on some stuff - their tinned tomatoes is one example. Unless they have put the price up by a penny or so, they must be absorbing the extra print costs elsewhere.

However, after seeing Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall say last night that farmers are paid 2p per chicken that then becomes a 2 for £5 chicken, maybe they don't have to absorb an extra few pennies on full colour printing.......

This thread has opened my eyes, I am ashamed to say I had no idea of the value of food or what I was paying for until recently.

after reading this thread past couple of days, gave myself a challenge. Try and do ALL the shopping in value labels only.

So I did ok. Only things which werent were

dd's requested treat 1 tin ravioli
warburtons loaf (hate other bread so false economy buying as it goes in bin)
fresh pork (didnt have a value one??)
    loose satsumas
    milk
anchor spreadable (although did get large tub value soft spread for all my baking)

Thats going to be my new challenge!!!! Getting all shopping in the value range :)

    Nice one angelflower

I think there are Value oranges in nets if you fancied them as a swap from the satsumas.

There isn't all that much difference between 2 or more colour printing in terms of ink. Ink is relatively inexpensive, and of course you don't use much of it per piece of packaging.

The main problem with multicolour printing is registration - getting all the colours lined up with one another. Doing that wastes paper/cardboard on the front of your print-run the more colours, the more you waste, and of course that wastes time too. Obviously with only one colour you waste nothing at all, and with longer print-runs (as ASDA, Tesco ones are) - the less percentage waste you have.

It's the paper/cardboard that's the main running expense, and of course that doesn't change depending on the number of colours.

The main "fixed" expense are the plates and the design costs - you'd be surprised how big a percentage of a print run these are. For small runs, these can be 75%+ of the costs.

Only thing I'd say about Tesco value is watch out for the milk/orange juice!! Nothing wrong with either and in fact the orange is rather tasty but it just doesn't go well with your cup of tea first thing in the morning ;) they changed the packaging to include a picture of an orange on it but at quick glance its still easy enough for people like me to mistake it :p

You've just reminded me that my mum did this twice when she was here on holiday! Boy did we laugh.

but just think, your cupboards will be colour coordinated. Millions pay good money for advice on how to acheive a colour scheme of matched products and not only are you getting the look for free you're getting good products for a lot less than others pay

This is the only bit that actually drives me a bit nuts (well, more nuts :p).

:p ooo I think we all ought to buy shares in "tesco value" - they're going to rocket with all these converts (and we can all invest the money we've saved through switching!)
  • Re supermarket snobbery: people that sneer upon value etc really pee me off. Over here we have Lidl, Aldi, Netto etc, and a couple of other, 'normal' supermarkets. They're all the size of your average co-op though, so not huge. It's made me realise how snooty we are, I mean I've been living off Lidl for 4 months and it's fine, no problems at all, in fact the fruit and veg lasts longer than it did from Tesco/Asda when I was at home (though they don't understand good tea bags here boo), and when I move out when I go home, I shall be doing the same!
