EDF Flextras

So, it looks like EDF Sunday Saver is gone, never to return.

The new replacement is "Flextras" but that seems to be available via the app only. We can't even see what the offer / incentive is without the app.

I am really not motivated to have yet another app that I really don't need but, then again, Sunday Saver could be quite worth having monetarily if I managed to charge the car for free so this might be an app I can't afford to ignore.

I like the EDF app - great to be able to see detailed usage, manage car charging, check the account balance and billing history all in once place.

I've had a quick look and immediate takeaways of the benefits are:

    1. Free 12 month Tastecard for joining Flextras.
    2. 16 hours of free electricity to use when it suits you over the 12 month period. (This was a pop-up that I dismissed and can't find it to double-check the details.) There's a reference in the app to "bonus electricity hours" described as, "Look out for bonus hours of free electricity, just for being with Flextras. You choose when to use them across a weekend that suits you," which might be the same thing.
    3. Weekend Saver (replacement for Sunday Saver) the maximum hours you can get has increased to 25 hours which can be split over Saturday and Sunday. To earn the maximum, you'd have to keep your peak-time use below 9% of your total monthly electricity use. Weekends don't count. You have to choose your allocation of free hours before the end of Thursday for the weekend in question, otherwise EDF will automatically allocate for you (Sat 8am to 1pm, then Sun 8am to 1pm, then Sat 12am to 8am, then Sun 12am to 8am - which is confusing as it adds up to more than 25).

Seems to be more generous than Sunday Saver, at first glance, but interested to hear what other think. It's also not clear whether the energy shift starts now (with the first free electricity awarded in October) or in October.

ETA: Wording in email suggests it's 25 hours per month rather than weekly. So the scheme is not as good as Sunday Saver.

Sounds really somewhat more complex than Sunday Saver.

Getting below 9% is a stretch.

    The thresholds are as follows:

    18% or above - 0 hours

    Below 18% down to 15% - 5 hours

    Below 15% down to 12% - 10 hours

    Below 12% down to 9% - 15 hours

    Below 9% - 25 hours

So, the thresholds are fixed. If you are already below 9%, you get the 25 hours regardless. ?

IMO, it seems more straightforward. You only have to opt in once for each 6 month period. There's no individual baseline calculation so it incentivises people to use less at peak times, regardless of whether the scheme is live. Sunday Saver encouraged peak time use when the scheme was not running to improve baseline readings. The only things you actively have to do are, opt in at the start, shift energy away from peak times, log in on or before Thursdays to select when you want to use your free hours.

    Does it start immediately?

I'll take my car off charge if so.

  • I think the "Weekend Saver" hours are capped at 25 hours per month, whereas before it was up to a maximum 16 hours per Sunday. Unless I've read it wrong.

You're correct. The wording in the app was ambiguous, but I've just received an email which states:

"Sunday Saver is being replaced by Weekend Saver. So, what’s changed? You can now earn up to 25 hours of free electricity every month and choose when to use your free electricity on both Saturdays and Sundays."

So it's much worse than Sunday Saver.

Don't forget to sign up first. I'm assuming that people should start shifting energy to off-peak this month to be awarded free hours in October.
